Movie synopsis

MEMENTO, the second feature by writer-director Christopher Nolan (FOLLOWING), is an intricately constructed film noir that masterfully inverts time to comment on the foggy relationship between memory and truth. MEMENTO tells the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a former insurance investigator who witnesses a brutal attack on his wife. Knocked unconscious, Leonard wakes up with a rare brain condition--he no longer possesses short-term memory. He can remember his name and all the details of his past, but he can no longer make new memories. Armed with a careful system of remembering details (he compulsively snaps Polaroids and scribbles notes, then tattoos the important facts directly onto his body), the distraught Leonard goes on a manhunt to avenge his wife's death. To illustrate the unique and frightening state of the protagonist's mind (he cannot remember what happened even seconds before), Nolan takes a brilliantly successful risk in telling the story backwards. The film begins with Leonard killing the man he's looking for. From there MEMENTO unravels a compellingly disconcerting trail back to the start. As the layers of the story are peeled back scene by scene, Leonard's involvement with two enigmatic "friends"--who both claim to be helping him--complicates the mystery.Based on a short story by the director's brother, Jonathan Nolan, MEMENTO is an incredibly original film that is so wonderfully puzzling and eerily ambiguous that it will surely warrant repeated viewings.

Unique backwards progression - excellent film!

Created: 29/12/05
'Memento' is simply an excellent film. Using a unique backwards progression chronologically, the story focuses on Leonard, an insurance investigator who is looking for the man who murdered his wife.

Leonard has developed a condition that prevents him from making new memories. He has no short-term memory capacity. He can only remember his life before his wife died.

As he learns new clues, he takes Polaroid pictures, writes them down, and tattoes them on his body.

Traveling back in time, the movie puts us inside Leonard's head for a fascinating ride!

Highly recommended - a must-see film.

Interesting till the end

Memento is one of those pioneering films that does it right the first time. Ive watched it like 10 times, and it still intriques me and keeps me interested throughout the film. You know the director made the right choice of making the story chronologically backwards when you watch the movie in a foward fashion (not as interesting). Nolan's finest movie. 5 out of 5

Memento Mori

Created: 10/09/08
Memento is one of the most missed great movies of all time, it was directed by Christopher Nolan, he also did the new Batman series. This is an indeprendent movie that was shot mainly on location as opposed to on a soundstage, so there won't be any explosions if that's what you're looking for. Instead you'll find one of the best stories of all time interwoven with some great acting. I guarantee that you'll like this movie.

Cinema gold

Memento is in my opinion the best movie of 2000 and it is in my top three for the decade. It is a movie that is difficult to get your head around but it is rewarding. Watching the story being spun from such a unique perspective is amazing, and the replayability of it is high I have watched it many times and I'm amazed at the new nuances that I pickup. Any fan of crime mystery or thriller films should give this a look

An Immediate Top 10 Favorite

Created: 18/07/06
Any movie-lover who has not seen Memento, buy it, rent it, or watch it. It is an interesting story that takes place backwards and is phenomenally directed and written. I watched it once and immediately I wanted to see it again. It's one of those films you understand a little more every time you see it and pick up on things which you may not have noticed before. Also, there are unanswered questions once the movie is over. Typically, I hate that and I want everything to be explained, but in Memento it's so tastefully done that you can only speculate and talk about what has happened.
