Album Notes
Audio Remasterer: Erick Labson. This three-disc collection, released in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly's tragic death, maintains the perfect balance between greatest-hits anthology and collectors' set. Over the course of its 60 songs, it includes not only all of the tunes that made Holly a rock & roll legend, but plenty of lesser-known tracks and some previously unreleased material, further illuminating the all-too-brief career of the man who influenced legions of rockers for generations after his death.

Editorial Reviews
5 stars out of 5 -- [With] half a dozen demos recorded at Holly's New York home just months before his death....As a showcase for the purity of his voice, it's hard to beat.
Record Collector

THE MEMORIAL COLLECTION is pretty much everything a normal fan needs: three CDs, in chronological order, from the early recordings of Buddy & Bob to The Crickets' various incarnations to the solo recordings made in New York...
Paste

3 stars out of 5 -- Delicate yet explosive, nerdy yet macho, channeling Bo Diddley and predicting Lennon & McCartney, he wrote a phenomenal number of excellent songs...
Blender

5 stars out of 5 -- MEMORIAL COLLECTION boils the legacy down to his most essential work. An amazing number of classics are packed into its 60 songs, including all the hits.
Mojo

5 stars out of 5 -- [T]his 60-track anthology offers monster hits and raw early versions from rock's hiccup-voiced auteur.

A loving to tribute to Buddy Holly!

Created: 29/01/09
"The Day The Music Died" took place on February 3rd, 1959. This was the occasion that Buddy Holly, along with J.P."The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens, perished in a plane crash in Clear Lake, Iowa. 50 years later, Hiolly's music and legacy continue. This limited edition 3-disc CD set was released exclusively at Best Buy stores, in honor of the memorial. Spanning a total of 60 tracks, the song selection included represents a veritable variety of great music from Buddy Holly, showcasing his brilliant but brief career. There are a number of well-known hits ("That'll Be The Day", "Maybr Baby", "Not Fade Away", "Peggy Sue", "True Love Ways") as well as many lesser-known tracks and even some previously unreleased material. Several of the songs featured in this set were first issued in a remarakble album entitled "For The First Time Anywhere"; a few more debuted in the 1979 collection "The Complete Buddy Holly". What sets this 3-disc CD set apart from others is the high quality of the music selected for inclusion. While there have been several other "Best-Of" releases issued throught the years, there is something very special about this collection. Besides the great music included, there is also a 32-page booklet containing outstanding liner notes which were annotated by Bud Scoppa. Buddy Holly was more than just a great singer/songwriter; he was also a visionary with a keen eye for music. This "Memorial Collectio" makes the perfect companion to another 50th anniversary tribute album, "Down The Line: Rarities". After 50 years, the legacy of Buddy Holly lives on!

He was my late 50's rock & roll idol. I bought the Complete Buddy Holly vinyl a long time ago. Nothing could compare until this CD collection. The liner notes aren't as comprehensive but this is something to have in your collection of good music. The apartment tapes have been redone to perfection. 5 stars!

I was a Buddy Holly fan in the 50's in High School and still am. A Great Collection, and sounds better than my 45s.
