The Messengers (2007, DVD)
Created: 14/05/08
Twin filmmakers Danny and Oxide Pang's creepy 2003 feature THE EYE earned them enough kudos to make the leap to Hollywood, and their first effort is the creepy chiller THE MESSENGERS. A Chicago-based family comprised of Roy (Dylan McDermott), his wife, Denise (Penelope Ann Miller), their teenage daughter, Jess (Kristen Stewart), and young son, Ben (played by twins Evan and Theodore Turner) try to put the hard times behind them with a move to a picturesque farmhouse in North Dakota. Jess quickly becomes convinced that the house is haunted after some peculiar occurrences while she's alone there with young Ben. But Ben can't articulate what he's seen, and Jess's story is met with skepticism by her parents. It soon becomes apparent that past family tensions are slowly boiling to the surface. Meanwhile, the ghosts keep coming, and the Pang brothers never keep their audience waiting for long before another nerve-jangling scene shudders into view. But as the ghosts torment their new residents, Jess does a little research on the old farmhouse and discovers a few secrets that may just hold the key to why this is all happening. Packed full of CGI effects and a few moments that may cause a jump or two, THE MESSENGERS is a horror movie aimed at a young audience and not horror aficionados, as indicated by its PG-13 rating.
None the less I enjoyed this movie alot...The house is great looking and the special effects great...A must to own..........

This is the movie that happens when second-rate filmmakers try to cash in on the craze another movie creates. With special effects from _The Grudge_, they're trying to convince you that this will be a comparable movie--believe me, don't waste your time.
Maybe it's that both my husband and me are from Kansas, but we found it curious that a 'farmer' would proudly till his fields on his newly-fixed tractor . . . without hauling a tiller behind it. Stranger still, that he thought his sunflowers were "about ready" when the seeds were clearly falling out of the flower heads; that he had hay bales in his barn when he had no livestock; that he was planning to live on his labor from a crop that took maybe 4 acres; that he could afford to hire a hand with said small crop; that crows were able to rip apart his bags of seed with virtually no effort (truly, people hurl these things through feed stores--the bags just aren't that fragile)--the inaccuracies just go on and on and on. Add to this that Dylan McDermott doesn't look NEAR old enough to have a daughter that age, and the movie is so unbelievable as to not be frightening at all. The trailer may have very well been the best part of the movie.
I love thrillers and horror movies, and will always check out a good ghost story; this one just doesn't live up to my standards. If you've got to see it, rent it or check it out from your local library--don't waste your money and your shelf space by buying a copy of your own.

I like GOOD movies, this isn't one of them.
Poor writing provides lame dialogue, especially when they are trying very hard to be dramatic. At one point in the movie THEY SCREW UP and the daughter says her car crash happened 6 months ago when her parents just told us this event happened over 2 yrs ago!!
The 'creepy' real estate agent pops up out of nowhere a couple times for no reason. Not scary, just dumb.
The end is lame as lame can be, 100% typical Hollywood 'shocking twist' that you never see coming, except we've seen it before 100 times already in every other movie ever made.
I'm begging you to NOT watch this movie, don't waste your money please!

The Messengers I loved It - In My Humble Opinion
Created: 15/07/07
WARNING - SCARY!!
Mild Violence
Language
Mild Gore
I loved it, loved it, loved it!! Waited so long to see it and it did NOT dissappoint! I see so many "scary" movies these days that turn into a gore fest and don't frighten at all...this one frightens!
A family moves away from the big Chicago, searching for peace and a way to make a living...into a haunted house that only the 'troubled' teenager and the mute small child can see or sense!
Of course, no one believes...what follows is a thrill ride of frightening episodes from creatures who manifest from inside of the walls, near-miss escapes, unbelieving parents and the law...
A thrill ride. Devastatingly frightening special effects, utterly believable characters!
