Movie synopsis

Based on William Hayes's autobiography, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS tells the harrowing story of a young American tourist arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison by Turkish authorities for trying to smuggle two kilos of hashish out of the country. Billy (Brad Davis), suffering through the harsh realities of the Turkish penal system, sees a glimmer of hope when his father (Billy Kellin) arrives from the States with the intention of securing his son's release. But when that effort fails and the prison's savage environment becomes too much to bear, Billy opts for the only possible solution: breaking out of jail and riding the "midnight express"--prison slang for escape--to freedom.Director Alan Parker (MISSISSIPPI BURNING), aided by Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning script, fastens an unflinching gaze into the darkest recesses of physical and emotional cruelty. Supporting cast members Randy Quaid, John Hurt, and Bo Hopkins give stellar performances, and Giorgio Moroder supplies a jagged yet entrancing soundtrack for a film that is at one and the same time a Kafkaesque nightmare, a riveting exposé, and a testament to the dogged human thirst for dignity.

Midnight Express (1998,DVD)

This film has been at the top of my favorites since 1978. Unfortunately, it was overlooked by the Academy. Brad Davis (now deceased), gave a memorable performance as did William Hurt and Dennis Quaid. All three deserved the Oscar! Based on a true story, this film holds your interest from begining to end. I am sure that the Turkey Tourist Bureau cringed when they saw it as it totally alienated me from ever wanting to visit that country. I am very happy to have this title in my library.

Midnight Express - The Greatest Drug / Drama ever made!

Created: 03/04/07
A well done film, originally written by THE Oliver Stone. This film cronicles the true life story about a young man who goes to TURKEY with friends and gets caught trying to smuggle drugs out of the country. Amazingly told. It will have you at the end of your seat. Graphic in nature, not for children under the age of 14.

Old-Romans Take on MIDNIGHT EXPRESS

Definitely a classic that stands the test of time! The movie was completed in 1978 and still has a riveting effect on anyone that watches it from start to finish. Imagine yourself being thrust into a Turkish Prison with an initial sentence of about 4 years only to have it change within days of your release to near LIFE SENTENCE! This is what happened to Billy Hayes after attempting to smuggle hashish out of Turkey. The sadistic prison guard and Billy's ups and downs with fellow inmates make this a FANTASTIC WATCH. Not for the Feint of Heart!

Don't let this movie get by...

I remember the news headlines, but never followed the story in full. Recently after catching the "cut" TV version, finally decided to see the movie as written/directed. So glad I did !!!
NOTE: Read the book "Midnight Express" by Billy Hayes, first. Out of print, but still available. Also read: "After Midnight"; the life of Brad Davis. Also out of print, but relatively easy to find/purchase.

Worth Watching.

Excellent movie. Great true story of an American that goes to Turkey and attempts to smuggle hash back into the United States. Great depiction of the horrific things that go on in prisons in Turkey and other middle eastern countries. One of the few movies that I can watch over and over.
