Movie synopsis

Just like Bob Dylan before him, Miles Davis challenged the boundaries of an entire genre of music by going "electric" on his groundbreaking 1969 album BITCHES BREW. Expanding upon Miles' previous experiments in jazz fusion, BITCHES BREW blended improvisational rock and jazz into an exciting new style that was highly controversial upon its release, but has since made the album one of the most influential records of all time. MILES ELECTRIC: A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLUE finds the jazz trumpeter performing BITCHES BREW live in concert at the legendary 1970 music festival Isle of Wight. Performance footage is interspersed with interviewed appearances by Miles' former band members Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, as well as admirers such as Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell.

This DVD shows clearly what Miles represented on 20th century music. He was much more than just an icon, he was a magnificent musician and creator, a fantastic trumpeter with a unique sound and style. All members of the band on this 1970 date on the Isle of Wight festival became, on next years, musical legends and leaders on their own right of the chief bands to come. The line-up shows Corea,Jarrett,Holland,Bartz and DeJohnette in the beginning of their succesful careers but showing already incredible talent and originality.
Miles himself is in superb form playing the entire range of his dark Martin Committee trumpet with an almost super human strenght. He called the single 38 minute theme on the date "Call it anything" when asked and it is due the song is made of some suites taken from previous year Bitches Brew album.
Additional interviews with musicians friends are on the money also.
Anyone interested in jazz or simply in good music should take a look on this seminal and sublime moment of creation.

One of the best 70's Miles video available!

Created: 15/12/10
This is a really great DVD. It's much more than just concert footage, there are very entertaining and candid interviews with many of Miles' notable sidemen over the years including Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz, Dave Liebman, Jack DeJohnette and others like Santana, Joni Mitchell, etc. The interviewer clearly was asking some really good questions and gets the artists really digging deep for their responses, i.e. Keith Jarrett: "Are you in a trance?" The video is very, very well done as it was filmed by the professional camera crew that was on hand to document the entire Isle of Wight festival. The production value is much higher than what you typically see on a jazz video. Miles is in top form throughout the video, as Jarrett said his performance on this session is a virtual microcosm of the history of jazz trumpet--he pretty much summed up the entire lineage from Pops to today. Definitely buy this DVD, you'll love it!!!!

A Story Well Told and Presented--And The Music Rules!

Created: 04/11/07
It wouldn't surprise me if this docuconcert won a Grammy or an Oscar or both. I can't presume to offer anything more substantial about this dvd than you might already have access to (esp. the review on epinions). However, to be useful, I can list the scene selection as found in the lovely brochure accompanying the dvd. It's a whole lotta typing but--what the hey--this dvd is worthy. The dvd runs for 123 minutes, 38 minutes of which is the Isle of Wight concert.

SCENE SELECTION:

1. A Spiritual Orgasm
2. "So What" Kind of Blue 1964
3. Fender Rhodes Piano The New Electric Toy
4. Bitches Brew Shaking The Foundations
5. Betty Davis and Miles' Hard Core Rock
6. Boxing, Improvisation and Miles' Music
7. Caught Up In The Craziness Of The Sixties
8. The Critics' Jazz - The Dirty Word
9. Embracing The Shock Of Electricity
10. The Isle Of Wight - The Sidemen
11. ***Call It Anything*** The Isle Of Wight Concert 1970
12. Tributes To Miles' Genius
13. End Credits
