From the opening "Hey Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Has A Deal" to the final "Don't Let's Start," this is a dizzying array of hook-filled songs brimming with catchy absurdities. The duo of John Linnel and John Flansburgh created an incredible catalog of deceptively complex tunes during the second half of the '80s and this collection, along with the aforementioned first releases, tells the tale. This was all prior to their signing to a major label and many of the songs are imbued with an endearing quality of homemade (but never lo-fi) warmth. The three above-mentioned albums have also been collected together as the two-disc set THEN: THE EARLY YEARS.
