Album NotesDigitally remastered recordings featuring Jimmy Giuffre, Stu Williamson, Victor Feldman, Russ Freeman, Mel Lewis, Scott LaFaro. A collection of memorable swing classics done by men fine enough to give them lasting memorability. Extended modern stylings of choice tunes from some great Broadway musicals.
Revered West Coast jazz arranger Paich never had any trouble recruiting the cream of California's jazz crop. Here, for example, he is joined by multi-reedist Jimmy Guiffre, drummer Mel Lewis, pianist Victor Feldman, and bassist Scott LaFaro. Features 17 jazz standards including "If I Were A Bell" and "Love For Sale."Personnel: Marty Paich (piano); Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet, baritone saxophone); Art Pepper (alto saxophone); Bob Enevoldsen (tenor saxophone, trombone, valve trombone); Bill Perkins (tenor saxophone); Bill Hood (baritone saxophone); Stu Williamson (trumpet, valve trombone); Conte Candoli, Frank Beach, Jack Sheldon, Al Porcino (trumpet); Vincent DeRosa (French horn); George Roberts (trombone); Russ Freeman (piano); Victor Feldman (vibraphone, percussion); Mel Lewis (drums).Recording information: Los Angeles, CA (01/??/1959-07/07/1959).Editor: John Flanagan.Modern Touch is a CD reissue that compiles the complete contents of two LPs led by arranger-pianist Marty Paich: The Broadway Bit and I Get a Boot out of You. Since the groups are similar (being 12 or 13 pieces depending on whether they have two or three trumpets), both of the albums were recorded in 1959, and the mixture of show tunes with jazz standards is logical; this is a very unified set. Paich's arrangements always swing, altoist Art Pepper is well showcased, and among the other key players are Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet and baritone), vibraphonist Victor Feldman, trumpeters Stu Williamson and Jack Sheldon, and either Paich or Russ Freeman on piano. This is fun if slightly conservative music that fits the modern mainstream of the era. ~ Scott Yanow
