Album Notes
Producers: Muff Winwood, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Iovine, Jerry Wexler, Barry Beckett, Neil Dorfsman. All songs written by Mark Knopfler except "Money For Nothing" (Knopfler/Sting) and "The Carousel Waltz" (Richard Rodgers).Released in late 1988, as everyone was waiting for the follow-up for Brothers in Arms, the 12-track Money for Nothing does an adequate job of summarizing hits and highlights from Dire Straits. Since the group only released one studio album after this compilation, and that really didn't produce any blockbusters, Money for Nothing winds up being a pretty good career summary. Far from perfect, though: too many album rock hits, such as "Expresso Love" and "Skateaway," are missing, plus there're two live cuts and the new cut "Where Do You Think You're Going?" doesn't go anywhere. Discounting these, the remainder of the compilation does hit many of the big songs, relying heavily on Brothers in Arms. Sultans of Swing, the post-On Every Street collection, is a better overview, yet this still has enough of the best-known tracks to satisfy the majority of casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Not perfect compilation but still excellent

Created: 18/12/08
A great starting point if you're not familiar with Dire Straits. This set features all the band's best known tracks, 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo & Juliet', 'Tunnel Of Love', 'Private Investigations' and most of the hits from the Brothers In Arms album. 12 songs in all, a few rarer tracks on here too, including a live version of 'Portobello Belle' and 'Twisting By the Pool' from the band's EP released in 1983. A live remix of the epic 'Telegraph Road' is also included, if not on the LP at least on the CD.

The downside to this 'best of' is that the tracks from 'Brothers In Arms' are edited, and this set ignores 'Communique' completely apart from a remixed version of 'Where Do You Think You're Going?' that doesn't sit very comfortably with the rest of the album.

This appeared before Dire Straits' last studio album 'On Every Street' was released (although that album didn't produce major hits and was probably their weakest).

There are many other Dire Straits songs that are worthy of inclusion on a 'best of' set, but this is a much better compilation than the 'Sultans of Swing best of' CD that followed it 10 years later. It would take a double CD to include all the band's best songs in their full-length form, as 2005's 'Private Investigations' demonstrated. Not perfect, but excellent as a career summary of the band from 1978 to 1985 and still an enjoyable listen.

Understated greatness

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are probably best know for Money for Nothing (I want my MTV) and The Walk of Life. Both are on this CD, but they are the worst cuts. My favorite is Portobello Belle which features sublime guitar in a nice story song about a woman in a market in London. I also like Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet as well as The Sultans of Swing...

Mark Knopfler best of the best

I bought this cd because I simply had worn out my first copy. This compilation of Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits music--to the date of publication--represents one of the best--if not the best--contemporary guitar gods. I hesitate to say "rock" because his talent extends to many genres and many instruments. His tunes and lyrics are exceptional. He is a master storyteller who sets his tales to guitar and back up that puts the listener in another world with the music. He is the master.

it is what it is, a collection of dire straits songs.

it was cheap so i bought it. i'd never heard anything except their old radio hits, so i figured it try the "best of" out to see what else made this band rock. there's some decent stuff on there, and if this "best of" is accurate, i'm glad i never bought any of their full-lengths. but the good songs are good, and their pop stuff is what made dire straits, dire straits. that and a parody by weird al of course.
