    Synopsis
Perhaps because of their seemingly ephemeral nature when compared with the Beatles, in whose image they were created, the showbiz-concocted 1960s pop group the Monkees have never undergone serious critical study. Music historian and confirmed Monkees devotee Andrew Sandoval does much to remedy this neglect in this minutely detailed survey of the band's daily existence. Sandoval documents the Monkees' recording sessions, in which talented artists like Leon Russell, Stephen Stills, and Neil Young often participated, as well as the band members' many extracurricular activity--some of it unexpected, like Mike Nesmith's attendance at the Beatles' recording of "A Day in the Life." Sandoval also recounts the true story behind Jimi Hendrix's stint as the Monkees' opening act, and the interesting fact that the Beatles, who obviously never regarded the Pre-Fab Four as serious rivals, honored the American group after their London premiere. Exhaustively researched, THE MONKEES is obviously a labor of love by Sandoval, who has also masterminded the re-release of much of the band's catalog on Rhino Records.

Hey, Hey, it's an excellent piece of reading!

    Created: 06/05/09
Noted author Andrew Sandoval has written a brilliant piece of reading about The Monkees, a day-by-day account about the group that was originally created for a television sitcom in the 60s, with a chronicle that dates from the initial conception in 1965 to the end of the group at the end of 1970, followed by their subsequent reunions and revivals in the 70s, 80s and 90s. What Mr. Sandoval has accomplished is nothing short of an fabulous look at the lives and careers of Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz. This is a detailed retrospective that tells exactly how the forursome were discovered and brought together for a television series about a fictional music group that would go on to become a real band. All 58 episodes of the original series are mentioned, as is their sole feature film from 1968, "Head" and their 1969 network special "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee". The pages also list every song that the grouop recorded during this time-frame. Among the song titles are a great number of recordings that remained unissued or would go on to be later released during the 80s and 90s. And, there are listings of all of their singles and albums, including their Billboard chart placements. It is almost like an open door to a behind-the-scenes look into the every-day workings of The Monkees, and what made them so popular and successful to begin with. The boys, as a quartet, might have been created for a network series, but they ended up becoming a full-fledged performing unit, and this book tells the whole story of how it happened. It's a must-have for every Monkees fan.

Monkees Recording Sessions ... and more!

    Created: 16/06/06
Easily the best book on the Monkees ever published.

Andrew Sandoval not only details every tracking session, vocal overdubbing and subsequent sweetening session the Monkees ever did (including unreleased material) but also concerts, filming schedules, broadcast dates, record releases are all detailed.

As if that weren't enough, the author also includes a quick reference index for every song giving an alphabetical synopsis index for each song and the the pages where the complete information can be found. It's a beautifully handled reference work.

This book contains plenty of photos too, most of them previously unpublished. While this book may give the casual Monkees fan more information than they might feel they need, even the casual listener will grow to appreciate it and hardcore fans (such as myself) will refer to it constantly.

I love the book there is nothing I did not dislike about the book. Was very suprised the book was big nothing wrong about that because I thought it was going to be a small paper back. It was a gift for my boyfriend and he really loves it. I see the rating on the screen and it is not what I rated it as all excellent on everything.

    What a Fantastic MONKEE Book!

    Created: 13/05/08
A terrific trip down memory lane with so much detail about the Monkees; where they were on any given day. As I poured through it I remembered where I was at the same time. It was nostalgic and very personal at the same time and I loved it. I bet you will too.
