Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS JULY 1, 2006 There are countless movies about haunted houses, but first-time director Gil Kenan brings us the story of a house that is itself a monster. In CGI, voiced by Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhall, and others., MONSTER HOUSE is a feat of blockbusting filmmaking--a visually stunning, witty tale that is sure to stimulate children and their parents. The film focuses on an anthropomorphic mansion, a haunted house with human characteristics that actively frightens neighborhood folks as it attempts to reign over its inhabitants. One day, a trio of intrepid youngsters, sick of being terrorized, decide to fight back. They are cutely pubescent DJ (Mitchel Musso); his fumbling, chubby friend Chowder (Sam Lerner); and smart-as-a-whip tomboy Jenny (Spencer Locke), who immediately enchants the awkward boys. The local police are no help, so DJ, Chowder, and Jenny are left to their own clever devices, which result in a series of rollicking, hilarious, and sometimes scary adventures. A cast of colorful personalities surrounds the central characters, and they are voiced by luminaries who include Catherine O'Hara, Kevin James, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kathleen Turner, Steve Buscemi, and the brilliant Fred Willard. And teen hipsters will delight in hearing the droll voice of Jon Heder (the title character of cult hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE) as a deadbeat pizza maker nicknamed "Skull." First-time director Gil Kenan proves spirited and highly adept at mastering such a high-tech production, and followers of animation will want to pay attention to the use of new digital techniques that stray away from straightforward computer drawing. MONSTER HOUSE is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis, who helmed the innovative and sophisticated animated feature WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? in 1988. He once again proves that family fare need not be alienating to older viewers, but can appeal to on every level from childhood and upward.

Spielberg does it again with another great movie, this one being a digital animation with a lot of humor. I have seen some other Spielberg movies (Jurassic Park for example) and most of them were action, but Spielberg pulls it off with a great kid (adults with enjoy too) movie about a Monster House in a neighborhood and a group of friends that live in that neighborhood try to save the neighborhood from it around Halloween.

Mr. Nebbercracker lives in the Monster House, a mean-old cook who yells at everyone if they run on his lawn or anyone who comes near the house really. Then he is taken to the hospital, D.J, the boy that lives right acrossed the street from him alone with the mean baby-sitter while this is happening.

D.J's best friend is Chowder, a chubby and funny kid. They watch the creepy house and then suspect it is a monster. Then they see a girl by the name of Jenny selling cookies and walking up the the front door of thr Monster House.

D.J and Chowder save her from being eaten by it and that is when the adventure takes off; they try to save the neighborhood from the Monster House!

A Fun and laugh-out film, this movie deserves the attention of critics. This movie is a wonderful family film and lets its charm off on the audience watching it and when they exit the theatre (this happening to me) people saying, "I really liked it." This is totally worth the watch, not being a rent from Blockbuster or your local library. This movie has amazing graphics, it being high standered. It's like your actually watching a real film with real people in it! This is highly recommended!

Hope you enjoy!

The House is Alive With the Sound of Screaming

Created: 27/10/06
I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I've had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.

The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.

The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.

Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn't expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.

Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?

The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!

A Classic in the making, but not for young children!

Created: 07/11/06
This is the most compelling animated movie I have seen in a long time. Computer animation adds realism, but this is a character driven story. I could easily imagine this as a live-action movie--the script was that good.

I was really surprised by how good this movie was. The premise was quite unique. The house isn't haunted; the house itself is alive and H-U-N-G-R-Y. The movie has a nice blend of action, suspense, mild horror and humor. I am sure I will be adding this DVD to my must-watch Halloween favorites.

Parents, please take note. This movie is rated PG for a reason! The imagery is very scary for young children.

Great Story!!!

Created: 29/11/06
Pros
+ Awesome animation with cool characters.
+ Big twist in the middle.
+ Great voice actors, special effects, & a story with some real depth.

Cons
- Might be too adult theme for some children. (Deals with death)
- Jon Heder's performance is way too short & he's so funny.

Comments
I love the feel of this movie. It reminds me of "The Burbs" in a lot of ways. And the art of the film is gorgeous. This movie is fun for the whole family & an instant Spielberg classic.

Verdict
Must have movie. Excellent animated film.

Monster House Great Halloween Fun

Created: 30/10/06
Saw this film when it first came out and thought it should have been brought out at Halloween as a feature film. The animation is fantastic. The children live across from a house which is very ominous. The house devours their toys and they want them back. So they go searching for the answer to their lost toys and behold they find a love story about the couple who owned the house. But they discover that the Husband has been trying to keep them away from his evil deceased wife who has taken possession of the house. How do they unravel this mystery. How do they release the ghost of the wife and how do they get their things back. Well you have to watch to find out. Oh and their Babysitter is a real witch. Great for kids 10 and up.
