Monty Python and the Holy Grail (DVD, 2001, 2-Disc Set, Special Edition)

Terry Gilliam, Monty Python Cast|Theatrical release: 1975 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

This classic Monty Python comedy, directed by Pythons Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, is a hilarious send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen. In addition to the set pieces, the film also includes the same kind of surreal animation that Gilliam contributed to the television series. Throughout the irreverent adventures, the Python crew eschews realism in favor of anachronistic social satire, a recipe it later returned to in the 1979 biblical farce MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN. Melding the ridiculous with the sublime, the film quickly inspired a cult following, generated a host of quotes, and even inspired a computer game 20 years after its release. The numerous songs and hysterical vignettes are sidesplittingly unforgettable.

Funniest movie of all time, hands down, #1 PERIOD!

Created: 25/07/06
Funniest movie of all time, absolute #1 (and my second favorite movie of all time). Here are my favorite movies... if you like the others but haven't seen this one.... drop what you are doing and get it NOW!

1. The Evil Dead 2. My all-time favorite movie. I've seen this movie about 20 times, in fact my family usually watches it every Halloween. It's a classic, what can I say? It's funny and scary, and Bruce Campbell is astounding. Army of Darkness is the sequel, and it's almost as good. Dead by Dawn, Dead by Dawn!

2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This is a tough list, since I'm mixing genres. But, I don't have any doubt that this is hands-down the funniest movie ever made. Every time I watch this I'm rolling on the floor. If you don't think this movie is funny, you should exit this site now!

3. Natural Born Killers. Well, I can say without a doubt, that Quentin Tarentino is my favorite writer/director. But, it was still a brainstorm to let Oliver Stone direct this one. And the casting... who would have seen Woody Harrelson from Cheers as the perfect psychopathic killer? This version on DVD, in particular, is awesome for the extra footage. Entire characters, including Ashley Judd and Dennis Leary were cut out - the extra scenes add a whole extra hour to the movie! Sick movie, but I never get tired of it.

4. Pulp Fiction. Quentin Tarentino will have the most movies in my top 100 as writer and director, and many will say that this is his best movie (although I personally like NBK better). Every actor he casts in a movie is catapulted to fame, and/or their careers are revived. After seeing this movie, it's no wonder that John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman are "A"-list. Then you add in Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken.... sheesh, how could this not be in my top 5?

5. Total Recall. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not the greatest actor, but he did an incredible job picking movies. He has a lot of great movies; you are going to see a few more in my top 100. But there is no doubt in my mind that this is, and will remain, his best movie. The collectors edition is really nice, in a tin can that looks like Mars!

6. The Usual Suspects. This movie is amazing, the first time I saw it... right when it ended I watched it again. It was just as good the second time. Kevin Spacey and Gabriel Byrne are two of my favorite actors, but actually this entire cast is fantastic. I guess this would be considered a crime movie, and yes - I liked it better than Goodfellas, Scarface and The Godfather!

7. Army of Darkness. The second movie from Bruce Campbell in my top 10, an amazing follow-up to Evil Dead II.

8. True Romance. The third movie by Quentin Tarentino in my top 10, and it's a solid entry. Not his most well known movie, but an all time classic in my book. With stars like Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper and Brad Pitt I guess I should have expected as much.

9. The Terminator. I think a lot of people's favorite movies are influenced by how their life was going when they first saw the movie that they are reviewing. As I mentioned above, I don't count Arnold S. as one of the finest actors of all time, but this is his second movie in my top 10. I was at a good place in my life when this came out, and it blew me away. I'm sure glad my name isn't Sarah Connor.

Are You New to Monty Python?

Created: 06/10/06
If you have never experienced Monty Python before, then this is where you should start. Mixing the lore of King Arthur with the usual antics found on their television show, Monty Python are at their prime with this film.

The film is essentially comprised of different sketches that follow the different characters around, a good chunk of which all take place in the same castle, although you'd never know without looking carefully. The film is shot exceptionally well for being made on such a low budget. All the characters are memorable, most importantly Sir Robin and Sir Bedevere, and their respective scenes. The Black Knight and the Knights of Ni are two of the funniest scenes I have ever witnessed on film. This is hands down my all time favorite movie in the comedy genre. The animation scenes that pop up in a few places throughout the movie are pointless but funny in their own right. And the French Taunter is to die for.

If you can dig English humor, this is the movie for you. If you can't, you should still check it out, most of my friends never liked English humor but still found this film hilarious. Pick up the special edition (the one I am reviewing), and check out the special features. It shows you where all the scenes were shot, and gives you a little background information on the film and some commentary by members of Monty Python. There is currently a Broadway production of the Holy Grail called "SPAMALOT" traveling around through major cities.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail 2-Disc set DVD

Created: 08/03/11
I love the silliness. I bought it this time because my son, 14, wanted to see it. It's certainly not for everyone, but if you are into the sublimely ridiculous, it IS for you. Don't compare this movie, if you haven't seen it, to other Monty Python movies, or other comedy that gets grouped with this genre. I know for sure you can hate most of that stuff and still love this. It really is layered and layered with jokes. I doubt anyone EVER has watched it on a second or third viewing and NOT found a dozen subtle jokes they missed the first time. From the opening credits (you should actually read the credits, and subtitles), it is really funny. I don't think I can pick a favorite part, but I can mention several without even thinking: the black knight, 2 empty halves of coconuts, swallows, swallows, swallows, she's a witch, the castle AnthraxI, personally, have never loved the end, but it's one of my all time favorites nonetheless. Definitely worth a shot, I think.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Great DVD, VERY FUNNY
Made Over 30 years ago (1975) and still a classic.
Monty Python have long been a source of amusement ...and from the opening scenes of this film with the never tiring *gallop gallop* of the two coconuts substituting horses it is so very easy to see why Monty Python and the Holy Grail will forever be classic that any aspiring comedian should view for FLAWLESS comedy...this film has everything one could wish for, 5 of the best comedians performing superb sketches in a feature length film..the one liners are memorable and the locations even more so...the rabbit is my favourite....

A must have!

Classic Monty Python! Beware the knights who say "Ni." The Python comedy clan skewers King Arthur and his knights as they quest far and wide for the Holy Grail in this inspired piece of lunacy. John Cleese stands out as the Black Knight, who suffers gory, slow dismemberment at the hands of the mighty king himself. (Cleese's protestation after every sword whack that "It's just a scratch" is still hilarious.)
