SB5101 - Perfect as DOCSIS 2.0 modem

Created: 10/04/11
I am very happy with my purchase of the Motorola SB5101 modem. It works perfectly for my 12 meg download internet service. Would pay for itself in 2.5 months, since my ISP provider used to charge a hefty $7 for the leased modem.

Few pointers for other buyers:
- The difference between SB5101 and SB5101u is that the latter does not come with a stand-by button.
- Please do the necessary research and then decide on either DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 modem. If you plan to upgrade to higher speed internet service (> 20 meg download), you would need the DOCSIS 3.0 modem. I read some users say that DOCSIS 3.0 works better even for lower speeds, but just save money and go for DOCSIS 2.0 if you need just that!
- PLEASE ENSURE that the modem you are buying is either new or if used, its taken off the internet account of the seller. Else, you wouldn't be able to add it to your internet account, since modem is based on unique MAC ID.
Hope this helps.

This is my second Surfboard. I bought a new one because my old one is ten years old and it was well past time to upgrade. The new ones are faster. I'm quite pleased with all of the Motorola line of computer products, particularly the Surfboard. It is easy to install and takes roughly ten minutes with your cable provider to activate. The price is great and if you buy on-line you can probably save 30% to 50% off of the retail price. Quality and design are excellent.

Reliable modem; certified for Comcast broadband

Created: 15/04/11
My daughters were renting a modem from Comcast for $8/month. I told them I could probably get them one on ebay and save them some money within a matter of months. The SB5101 is on Comcast's list of certified modems -- in fact, it looks to be the exact same model as the one Comcast will rent to customers. Plugged it in and it just worked -- like a toaster. No configuration needed. This is the second SB5101 I've purchased (the other for my mother in law) and it works perfectly.
