This opera is often recorded, but rarely well. The piece requires five virtuoso singers, but also a spirit of fun if its goofy east-meets-west premise (reflected in Mozart's score, with its "Turkish" orchestration and intricacies) to work. Here a young-sounding cast copes more than honorably with the vocal hurdles, but more importantly brings an uncommon spirit of youth, lightness, and adventure to the work. The animating spirit here is Christopher Hogwood, whose conducting (and the orchestral playing he elicits) is simply delicious, fleet and finely honed all at once. Lynne Dawson is surprisingly effective as Constanze, particularly in the fiercely difficult "Martern aller arten." Uwe Heilmann is an absolute model of grace, style, and elegance as Belmonte. One can pick at this or that about all the vocalists, but as an ensemble, they're the best I've ever heard for this work. Simply a joy!
