Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (DVD, 2008, Full Frame)

Zach Helm, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman|Theatrical release: 2007 | Rating: G (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In writer-director Zach Helm's whimsical 2007 film, MR. MAGORIUM'S WONDER EMPORIUM, veteran actor Dustin Hoffman plays the title character, a 243-year-old toy-store owner who is ready to pass his enchanted business on to his beloved assistant, Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman). However, when Molly, a former composer and pianist, has doubts about taking over the (literally) magical store, and an uptight accountant (Jason Bateman) appears to assess the establishment, the many inhabitants of the Wonder Emporium begin to rebel, resulting in a chaotic situation that can be fixed only with the help of a shy, lonely boy (Zach Mills). A first-time director best known for his inventive STRANGER THAN FICTION screenplay, Helm ably--ahem--helms EMPORIUM, which clearly nods to the WONKA and TOY STORY movies without seeming derivative. Always one to dive gamely into a quirky role (see TOOTSIE, RAIN MAN, HOOK, etc.), Hoffman makes Magorium both silly and endearing, while Portman charms as his earnest protégé, and Bateman provides an enjoyable level of skepticism while enduring the nickname "The Mutant." Although the film's playful quality could veer toward excess, its thoughtful script and able actors allow it to stand out as a highly entertaining production.

A MUST SEE MOVIE!

Created: 20/02/08
Ladies and Gentleman, this is one of the very few G rated movies.

SYNOPSIS
The eccentric owner of a magical toy store surprises the shop's manager by turning over ownership to her in a warm-hearted comedy fantasy directed by Zach Helm and starring Jason Bateman, Dustin Hoffman, and Natalie Portman. Portman plays the manager of the store that seems to be a reflection of the people who run it, and Bateman stars as the detail-oriented accountant assigned the task of assessing the establishment's monetary value. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

ACTING
Hoffman is always gold. Jason Bateman is funny as always, and Portman (who has a bad rap for acting in Star Wars) is actually capable of Oscar worthy performances (see "V for Vendetta") and is gorgeous and lovable.

SUMMARY
Your kids'll love it (mine were enchanted, and they're tweens) and you will too.

I loved this story. Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman do an excellant job of entertaining and creating interesting characters. This story about a magical toy store will captivate the youngsters and amuse the adults. Great movie to watch with the children. No horrible language. Some scenes may be scary for really young children, but usually resolve to a positive experience. Also stars Jason Batemen and Zach Mills. The movie deals with creating faith in yourself, death and friendship, not necessarily in that order.

For those who just like a good film

I went into this movie expecting something that was on par with a Disney/Pixar movie...light, fun, and entertaining. I left the movie cherishing the wonder emporium and loving the characters from the movie. The characters were rich, the acting was good, and the death sequence is now one of favorites, second only the that of Big Fish. Yes, some parts are gimmicky. It is a movie...a children's movie at that. Most times when someone says that a movie is "fun for the whole family," I expect something lame and forgettable. But this movie is certainly a great one for all: children, teens, and adults. And as a bit of icing on the cake, Alexandre Desplat wrote a beautiful score for this film

This is a great kids movie. Who doesn't wonder if the toys come to life when no one is looking let a lone right in front of you! What fun! I wish it had a little more live toy interaction. I didn't think Dustin HOffman was the right choice for the movie.. but it worked with him in it. The kid with the hats made the movie for me!

a moving movie for both kids and adults!

This is by far my most beloved movie. I'm by no means a child, but the morals and story behind this film is one so touching and true. Sometimes we all need reminded to believe in ourselves and watching this movie can instill within us that sense of self-motivation we may need to tackle the tasks ahead. Charming film for the whole family.
