Movie synopsis

With BAD SANTA, Billy Bob Thornton proved he was willing to go all the way--no holds barred--in portraying unsympathetic, foulmouthed jerks. Here he brings that same skill to bear as the title character, a sadistic junior high school gym teacher who is every uncoordinated or overweight student's worst nightmare. Best-selling author of self-help books, Farley (Sean William Scott) thinks the tortures he's suffered at the hands of Woodcock are just the stuff of traumatic childhood memory (such as being told, "You are a disgrace to fat, gelatinous kids the world over"), until he goes home to Nebraska to pick up an award and learns his widowed mother (Susan Sarandon) is in love with the man who made him miserable all those years ago. Farley recruits his unkempt buddy (Ethan Suplee) in a series of backfiring schemes to wreak some belated vengeance and expose Woodcock before the nuptials are sealed. There's plenty of nasty repartee between Scott and Thornton and some funny-disturbing bits from side characters, like Farley's ferocious publicist (Amy Poehler) and Bill Macy as Woodcock's even more sadistic father. Sarandon brings a lot of touching innocence to the table as a sheltered widow daring to feel love again, and Scott does some nice squirming and pratfalls. But of course it's Thornton's movie all the way--he grabs the ball and never lets it go, unless of course it's to hurl it at some poor kid's head.

"MR. WOODCOCK has an excellent premise and some funny one-liners....Susan Sarandon plays the mother, Beverly, just right."

MR. WOODCOCK, DVD

Created: 08/02/08
This concept amused me when it first came out because, when I was in junior high, we had a former marine who was the boy's "Coach." He had a reputation similar to that of Mr. Woodcock. The movie is darkly funny and Billy Bob Thornton is at his deadpan, no holds barred best here. Susan Sarandon is the perfect focus as the object of Mr. Woodcock' romantic feelings and as the mother of one of his abused former students. The bit with Mr. Woodcock visiting his father in a nursing home is a hilarious depiction of how none of us "fall very far from the genetic tree." The old guy is amazingly funny -- great lines....Amy Poehler's performance is a bit over the top and sadly superfluous to the story. She is a distraction and takes away from what could could have been a much better storyline in which the co-star comes to terms with his Mom issues and falls in love with his high school sweet heart during the home visit (the classic hollywood we miss so much).

RENTAL ONLY!

This was one of those films that it was hard to tell from the trailers whether it was good or crap. There was some good stuff in the trailer that suggested it could be good but maybe all the good stuff was in the trailer? I like Seann William Scott as a comedic actor and Billy Bob Thornton plays a good slimeball. The final product was somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed it but it wasn't the funniest movie I'd seen recently. The ending was kind of week. Still worth watching. I don't think it will be playing at Western Film. Comedies that don't get good buzz generally don't do well. The closest comparison is the similar School For Scoundrels from last year. I played that at Western Film and it didn't do very well.
The poster sucks. Not interesting and very obvious photoshopping.

MAY BE BETTER TO "RENT" THAN TO BUY

Created: 10/03/08
Overall, we rate Mr. Woodcock as an "average film". It does have some hilarious parts, but they dont last throughout the film. If you have seen the Trailer/Pre-Views, you pretty much seen all of the comical parts of the movie. We bought it, and some of us here saw it as worth keeping, while others of us say "sell it... we should have rented it first". It definitely could have been a much better movie than what it was. Throughout the film, we were always looking for Farley to get one up on Woodcock, but it never really happened.

It has its funny parts, but it gets a little dry and may lose your attention several times throughout the film. Will we watch it again? Maybe, maybe not.

Rent It or Buy It? We say Rent It first!

Our Overall Rating: 5.5/10

Excellent Comedy!

I loved this movie!!! Billy Bob Thornton has once again brought laughter to the movie screen. His character of the gym teacher in grade school was excellently played! I would highly recommend this movie for adults, and possibly some teens.
