Movie synopsis

Disney fashions a modern-day icon of girl power with its animated adaptation of the 2,000-year-old Chinese folktale MULAN. When barbarous Huns attack ancient China, the fiercely independent Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen) defies tradition by disguising herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place in the Imperial Army. With the help of Mushu (voiced by the resilient and newly kid-friendly Eddie Murphy), a wisecracking guardian dragon sent by her ancestors for protection, Mulan trains in boot camp and then heads off to face the brutal Hun leader Shan-Yu (voiced by Miguel Ferrer)--all the while struggling to keep her gender identity a secret. Chock full of the usual Disney delights--breathtaking visuals, catchy songs, and an inspirational protagonist of courage and conviction--MULAN is a welcome addition to the studio's annals of classic animation.

One of Disney's best!

Created: 17/04/11
Although many Disney animated films attempt to show female empowerment, most of the Disney princesses end up channeling that energy into catching a man. Ariel, for example, sings about exploring the world above the ocean, but all she does once she gets there is marry Prince Eric. Belle wants a life outside her provincial village; she achieves her goal by marrying the Beast. Then there's Mulan. Like the other two, this young woman doesn't quite fit society's expectations. She often puzzles or embarrasses her family. But because she loves them, she poses as a man and takes her disabled father's place in the Army when China is invaded. Mulan has to prove her strength and courage alongside the guys. Yes, Mulan has a handsome commanding officer, but Mulan never takes her eyes off the real prize. She is fighting for her family and her country, not trying to catch a husband. The songs add to the story, moving the plot along rather than distracting from it. This is one of the best Disney animated films, one that can be enjoyed by adults even when there are no kids at home.

I liked it more than my daughter

Created: 04/12/10
I think I liked this one more than my princess loving 4 year old daughter. It shows some Chinese culture that kids just don't understand. (she fights in the army posing as a man in place of her father because she doesn't want her older father to have to fight again... and she disgraces her family when everyone finds out she's a woman, but of course proves herself and paves way for women's rights) Not the typical princess dresses and balls type of movie.

Mulan

This Disney movie sends a great message to girls and other children who feel out of place in life.
China is at war and Mulan decides to go fight in her fathers stead.
She dresses as a chinese warrior and joins the chinese army to fight.
With the help of Mushu and Cricki Mulan assists in defeating the enemy and earns the respect of the men in the army.
Very cute family movie. I still enjoy watching it when the kids have it on.

The first time this movie came out, I've loved it! I purchased this movie for myself but my children ended up liking it, as well! Two thumbs up! This movie is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. In the movie, she was called Fa Mulan, the only daughter of an aged warrior Fa Zhou. She impersonates a man and takes her father's place during a general conscription to counter a fictitious Hun invasion led by Shan Yu. Along with her guardian dragon Mushu, her captain, Li Shang, a lucky cricket, "Cri-kee," and her companions, Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po, she battles the invading Hun army to save China. Great movie to add to anyone's Disney collection. A must see!
