Movie synopsis

In the 1920s, a group of archaeologists led by adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) discovers the mummified body of Imhotep, an Egyptian priest who was cursed for falling in love with the Pharoah's mistress. When they accidentally resurrect him, the battle for survival begins, as the mummy begins to use his powers to reclaim his long-lost love. Director Stephen Sommers updates this classic Universal monster for the 1990s, using a dazzling array of computer-generated special effects. Fun performances from Fraser and Weisz add to the tongue-in-cheek Saturday matinee appeal.

The "Ultimate" Way to Watch The Mummy

Created: 03/06/06
The Ultimate Edition of the The Mummy is great. I also never saw the movie, because I thought that it would be scary and graphic. I was so amazed when I finally saw it. The Mummy is not graphic with the special effects at all. It is a great story with great characters. The main characters, Rick and Evelyn, have this instand bond which only gets stronger throughout the movie. And John Hannah is fantastic as Evelyn's brothers Jonathan. He is great at comedy. The cast is excellent. You will be laughing and on the edge of your seat the whole time. What is so great about this dvd is the three choices of commentary: Brendan Frasier; Stephen Sommers & Bob Duscay; and Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O'Connor, and Arnold Vosloo. Stephen & Boby Duscay and Oded, Kevin, and Arnold give the most insightful commentary. You will find out lots of great tidbits and information on the movie. The Mummy was the first time I have ever watched a movie with commentary before. After seeing The Mummy and The Mummy Returns at least 5-6 times each, I wanted to listen to the Commentary. The commentary gives great insite into the making of the movie and the story of the movie. Another wonderful feature is the photo gallery full of great photos from the movie. One of the main reasons I made this purchase was because I liked the multiple commentaries and the additional special features. This dvd is definitely the "Ultimate" way to watch The Mummy, an exciting, funny, and adventerous movie. It is worth the price you pay. Enjoy!

Mummies! Beetles! Sand! WooHoo!

Created: 06/09/08
The Plot: A librarian and her brother save a prisoner from an untimely
death by recruiting him to help locate a fabled Egyptian tomb, and set
off into the desert to find not only treasure, but a labyrinthine
burial ground for a cursed Mummy who, in the course of the adventure,
"accidentally" becomes resurrected and wreaks havoc on everyone with a
fez, dress or gun.

The Pros: More than anything this film is very funny, especially if you
pay attention to the witticisms in between the main dialog. Then
there's the entertaining and very well done special effects (watch for
the scenes with the mummy-induced sand-storms; pretty amazing stuff).
The slapstick doesn't make for a very good horror film, but it does
still manage to get it's "grossness-quotient" in with flesh eating
beetles and soul-sucking rotting corpses (great effects again done to
make the Mummy appear, well - "juicy", as they say in the movie). The
acting is as good as it's going to get for a film of this genre, which
in my opinion outshines even the Indiana Jones trilogy. Brendan Fraser
is just plain perfect - delivering one uproarious line after the other
- much more entertaining than Harrison Ford IMHO. Special nod to Rachel
Weisz for being unexpectedly funny for what could have been a typical
damsel-in-distress role.

The Cons: The Mummy Returns does not satisfy, Tomb of the Dragon
Emperor (The Mummy 3) is even worse, and the Scorpion King, which stole
it's plot from The Mummy Returns, is worse than drinking bleach. On an
empty stomach.

Great Scenes: Omid Djalili as Warden Gad Hassan who, about 45 minutes
into the film, runs into the scene screaming and hands clasped atop his
fez as beetles devour him alive. I've replayed this scene at least 20
times, and each time it just gets funnier and funnier.

I Love This Movie!

Created: 02/06/08
I absolutely adored this movie in the theater and bought the DVD when it first came out. However a couple of moves later and my copy was lost. I never owned the Ultimate Edition and cannot find The Mummy anymore on its own; it's always paired up with The Mummy Returns. The extra features on the Ultimate Edition made it well worth the purchase; I'm glad I lost my original copy because this one is even better. This should be on the shelf of every household. It's a great movie with drama and comedy mixed in with adventure and even a little history. Love it!
