The Mummy Returns (DVD, 2001, Widescreen Edition)

Stephen Sommers, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz|Theatrical release: 2001 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Flanked by fabulous computer-generated battle scenes that would make BRAVEHEART proud, THE MUMMY RETURNS is a fast-paced sequel that surpasses the hit 1999 original, both directed by Stephen Sommers. Virtually the entire cast has come back for another exciting go-round, this time trying to prevent Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) from gaining control of the Bracelet of Anubis and taking on the Scorpion King (the Rock) for control of the world. But to gain that power, Imhotep and his vicious true love, Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez), must get to the Oasis of Ahm Shere before Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser), his wife, Evie (Rachel Weisz), their son, Alex (Freddie Boath), the mysterious Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), and Evie's brother, Jonathan (John Hannah, who provides much of the comic relief). Set in 1933, THE MUMMY RETURNS combines elements of the STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES films in letting loose a scintillating thrill-ride of a movie, chock-full of terrific special effects and marvelous locations (Morocco, Jordan, and London), erupting in a spirited tale of flight and fantasy, sword and sorcery. The addition of Freddie Boath to the cast increases the suspense as well as the comedy; his scenes with the evil Lock-Nah (fiercely played by OZ veteran Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) are among the best in the film. THE MUMMY RETURNS also features professional wrestler the Rock as the Scorpion King, who was defeated in 3067 BC and is ready to be resurrected in the Year of the Scorpion.

What can I say, this movie is one of the greats up there with Indiana Jones. Even I can watch it every once in a while and enjoy it over and over again. Plus the scenery is pretty cool in the movie if you like Egyptian pyramids stuff.

The first one might be just a little better, but this one certainly is worth having if you like this kind of action/adventure film. Sure you can pick it apart like most action films that can't even put the right engine sound with the right type of motorcycle, but this film has tons of action scenes so I doubt it would be possible to perfect them all. Huge action, great characters, and a big story with some comedy tossed in equals a great movie.

The Mummy Returns (2001)

"The Mummy Returns" is not as good as its predecessor, but good enough to own and to watch again and again. Evie is not as charming as was the innocent librarian of the first movie, but the son is lots of fun. The scenes are every bit as spectacular and action-packed as the original.

Back for a second adventure, Rachel Weisz and Brendon Fraser star as man/wife adventurers into Egyptian history fighting the return of Arnold Vosloo the Mummy Imhotep, as he once again rises from the dead, this time joined by his re-incarnated Princess Ank Su Namun. Evie and Rick O'Connell are married and have an adventuresome son named Alex who mistakenly locks the bracelet of the Scorpion King on his wrist and the battle begins for the O'Connells to save Alex from Imhotep and Anck Su Namun. The Mummy and his Princess want to raise the army of Annubis to defeat the Scorpion King (played by Duane "Rock" Johnson WWF wrestler) and conquer the world. It's another thrill a minute popcorn movie returning the stars of the first movie including Oded Fehr as Ardeth Bey, defender of the old Egyptian tombs and it's long dead pharoahs. If you're looking for historical fact or great drama you won't find it, but you will find excitement, laughs and adventure.
