Movie synopsis

Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former pop idol (the hilarious opening video introduces his '80s new wave band Pop!) who is now playing the nostalgia circuit, but has maintained enough dignity to turn down an appearance on a "Battle of the '80s Has-Beens" TV reality show. Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) is a gifted writer with deep inferiority issues who's been hired to water Fletcher's plants, and ends up becoming his emergency fill-in lyricist for a song he needs to deliver to teen queen singer Cora (Haley Bennett) in four days. Despite this contrived "cute meet," the film, to its great credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com tropes in favor of organic, character-driven conflicts and comic situations. Alex and Sophie fall in love, struggle over their song, and wrestle with their own respective resistance to romantic happiness, while simultaneously coping with the frustrations of the creative process and the demands of the music industry. The two leads (aided by great comic sidekick turns from Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston) manage to pull all this off with a lightness of touch that makes the characters' vulnerability appealing and not pathetic. The original songs by Adam Schlesinger (the go-to guy for singer-songwriter film music) is charming and catchy.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3 stars out of 4 -- "Hugh Grant's has-been pop star in MUSIC AND LYRICS is the ideal fit for the actor's trademark low-key, self-deprecating wit."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (02/16/2007)

"MUSIC AND LYRICS includes some great throwback faux music videos." -- Grade: B-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (02/23/2007)

"The couple work well, with Barrymore's more grounded performance enabling Grant, whose role is business as usual, to steal most of the laughs....There is an understated poetry of sorts at work in the film."
Sight and Sound - Patrick Fahy (04/01/2007)

"Grant and Barrymore's] chemistry and comic repartee evoke the lightheartedness of screwball romantic classics of the Thirties and Forties."

Grant and Barrymore In a Perfect Romantic Comedy!

Created: 09/05/07
Music and Lyrics is ranks among the elite of romantic comedy films. Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have just the right chemistry to make this movie what it is, near perfect. Grant plays down and out musician Alex Fletcher who had a huge hit in the 80's with his band POP! but has experienced a downturn of luck since. Barrymore plays Sophie Fisher. Sophie is a quirky replacement to Alex's usual plant lady, but she quickly becomes roped into a role as a lyricist to help Alex write a new hit song. The two have totally conflicting personalities and the sparks start to fly. From beginning to end this movie is laugh your heart out funny and plenty romantic. The music is extremely entertaining and the actors are totally charming. There is so little not to like about Music and Lyrics that it's an absolute must-watch/must-own for just about anybody. Don't miss this one!

POP GOES MY HEART for MUSIC and LYRICS :)

Created: 09/05/07
This was a cute romantic comedy. I really enjoyed it especially the "Pop" music video because it had a real 80's feel. Men and women can both enjoy it. Hugh Grant plays a washed up member of a famous 80's band. The band reminded me of WHAM! He has an opportunity to write a song for a popular singer to revive his career but needs someone to help with the lyrics. Then, he meets Drew Barrymore. She's watering his plants but has a talent for lyrics. It's a likeable effort from both actors. The movie is a little unrealistic. I don't think it is their best work but still highly enjoyable. It's a good date movie or rental.

Music and Lyrics

Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant make a great combination in this movie about how rock stars of the past meets today's realities. Hugh plays a rock star from a group that was greatly loved in the past and with diehard fans wanting to hear more. Drew is not effected by his past fame, which makes this movie real. It combines humor, romance, chemistry and reality. Both of these actors make this movie what it is and I am glad to have added it to my collection. Drew is very versatel and this movie proves it and shows that she can play almost any type of part and does this one great justice. This is a feel good movie and isn't one of those movies that drags along making you wish that it was over. To me this was one of those movies that you wish wouldn't end. I really enjoyed it and I believe if you are a fan of either one of these actors you will agree with me 100%. It isn't even a chick flick like some had told me that it was. I give this movie a thumbs up and recommend it to anyone who wants to be entertained and enjoy a good movie. Great job by both!!!

Good Well Done Romantic Comedy

Created: 21/10/09
Was worried about Hugh Grant in a comedy about writing music! As it turned out, he and Drew Barrymore blended well and all in all I thought it was a fun little (nothing very heavy at all) movie. I was surprised actually at how well Hugh Grant did in this type of comedy. Nothing great to challenge either of the two star's abilities, but still not a bad movie at all. I'd give it a C+ or B- probably.

This movie is great! Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant have excellent chemistry. Very, very funny. The 80's look, music videos, etc... are spot on. A great romantic comedy.
