Movie synopsis

Departing from the action-oriented plots of his previous films (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND and LAPUTA, CASTLE IN THE SKY), Japan's most beloved animator, Hayao Miyazaki, provides a slower-paced, stunningly realistic portrayal of life in the countryside. When their mother is hospitalized because of an unspecified illness, two young sisters spend a summer in the Japanese countryside with their father. The children's strange new environment turns out to be a natural wonderland filled with exotic real-life creatures and a trio of furry, woodland sprites who can only be seen by children. The film evokes both the terrors and wonders that children can experience unbeknownst to adults--a feeling the young Miyazaki knew only too well after his mother was hospitalized because of spinal tuberculosis. With homages to ALICE IN WONDERLAND and MARY POPPINS, the second film from Studio Ghibli delighted audiences and put the young animation studio on firm financial footing.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"...[When the film] is dispensing enchantment, it can be very charming....Visually very handsome..."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (05/14/1993)

"...MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO has become one of the most beloved of all family films....This is one of the lovingly hand-crafted works of Hayao Miyazaki, often called the greatest of the Japanese animators..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (12/23/2001)

"[A] gentle, haunting fantasy rooted, as the best fantasy films are, in a strict psychological realism."
New York Times - Dave Kehr (03/14/2006)

"[I]t beguiles from beginning to end....What sticks with the viewer is the every-kid credibility of the girls' actions as they work, play and settle into their new surroundings."

First, avoid any PAN-SCAN versions of this movie. You'll know it when you see it!
Second, the voice actors in the earlier Fox Version are much more enjoyable and capture the spirit of this movie better than the later releases.

Simply put, Hayao Miyazaki created one of the most sincere and lyrical stories ever. This movie is a "must have" for young and old alike!

I got a great price on this out-of-print item. Box not in great shape but that's understandable for a dollar. I just wanted a backup copy of this great movie with the original dubbed cast. I also bought a copy on DVD. The movie itself is wonderful with fantastic, whimsical characters and an engaging story. I have been watching this film for over 10 years and I never tire of it.

This is the greatest kids video! You have to get the original VHS version, the updated DVD version is not the same. The dialog has been redubbed. In the newer version some of the dialog has been Americanized and the kids don't have as much personality. My children are teenagers and I made the mistake of selling our at a yardsale. They were so upset that I decided to replace it. I bought the DVD not realizing that it was different. We were all disappointed!I was thrilled to find an original on ebay.

This was my favorite movie growing up. Every week my grandmother and I would walk up the street to the grocery store where they would also rent movies. I rented the movie sooo many times that the owner of the grocery store gave it to me as a gift, but was unfortunately lost in a fire a few years later. I haven't been able to find the VHS version that I love anywhere until now! Disney did a re-create with Dakota Fanning a couple years back but it's nothing like the VHS version. This movie has an excellent plot and is great for younger viewers, but I reccomend it to anybody! Two thumbs waaaay up!

Loved this film as a kid, and I plan to show it to my kids one day. Miyazaki is a genius. A magical must-see.
