In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (DVD, 2008)

Uwe Boll, Jason Statham, Leelee Sobieski|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Much like cult-favorites LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER and MORTAL KOMBAT, IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE is a fantasy-adventure based on a popular video game series, Dungeon Siege. The film follows the simple but heroic and fearless Farmer, portrayed by Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER, THE ITALIAN JOB), as he gets caught up in the brink-of-war tensions of King Konraid (Burt Reynolds), his back-stabbing nephew Duke Fallow (Matthew Lillard), and the evil wizard, Gallian (Ray Liotta). The film features similar plot-points to the critically acclaimed THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy (2001-2003), including a sinister beastly army parallel to LOTR's orcs of Mordor, called the Krugs, responsible for killing members of Farmer's family and kidnapping his wife, Solana (Claire Forlani). High- adventure follows, as Farmer, and his brother-in-law Bastian (Will Sanderson) and friend Norick (Ron Perlman) pursue the Krugs, which lead them to a vast underground lair of enslaved humans, orchestrated by Gallian, as he seeks to create and rule a hellish underworld with magic and mysticism. The film also includes John Rhys-Davis (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) as Merick, a noble wizard, and the King's closest confidante and spiritual healer; and Leelee Sobieski (THE WICKER MAN) as Merick's daughter, who as the scorned lover of Gallian, has put the kingdom at great risk. Although some of the all-star cast seems a bit out of place in a sword-and-sorcerer epic, video game fans won't mind much as the majority of the two-hour film contains nonstop action and intriguing fantasy characters.

Over all this isn't a awful movie. The acting isn't the best and the story could have been a little stronger, but if you just set back and enjoy it without trying to pick it appart you will enjoy the movie. I'm a big fan of Lord of the ring type movies and although this isn't of that quality it does have that feel.

Not Bad At All

Could have been better though..The acting was fine some seemed a little stiff..there were some Xenaesq scenes..I loved the comedy..This film is about a Farmer who's Family is attacked and killed and his Wife stolen by a army of uglies called the Krugs..He goes after his Wife while mourning the death of their chid..he sets out with two other Men..one being his best Friend played by "Beauty and The Beasts" Ron Perlman and his Brother in law no idea the name or what he played on..both are terrible fighters..well, Ron is anyway..his fight scenes seemed a little stiff and forced to me..the Brother in law knows how to handle a sword..along the way Farmer as he's nicknamed finds out a HUGE secret..This movie does deliver on action, comedy drama and good old fashion love..I rate this 3 stars..action lovers may want to give this one a look see..

In the Name of the King

A really super action movie, molded around the Dungeon Siege game series with
Jason Straham playing a farmer (to begin with) that has amazeing fighting
abilities and co-ordination. A war begins between the King of the Kingdom and
a evil magician, who commands a kingdom by force useing a type of dog-monkey
soldiers. When the evil magician decides to takeover the Kingdom of the good
king, he makes the mistake of having his soldiers mess with Straham, and kill
his son plus captureing his wife. Straham joins the Kings forces, who is aided
by a good magician-and the fighting begins between the good forces and evil.
A great deal of fighting-in great scenes is in the movie. Although this fighting is intense it is not bloody or gory-therefore making it entertaining
for the teens in the family at least. An entertaining movie, and a surprise
ending with Straham gaining knowledge of his past-and gaining a very interesting future that could portend a sequal to this movie.

Worth A Watch

Created: 30/04/08
This movie is not bad,but certainly is not great. The action of the battles and fight scenes that Janson Statham are in,are pretty good. I like the lady
warriors that live in the forrest. The evil monster army which is controled by
Ray Liotta are not great at all. There like a cheap version from lord of the rings and look like monsters on a episode of power rangers. And Burt Reynolds
does make a weird king to me. Special effects are pretty good I would have to say.All I can say Ive seen better. But overall its a good watch.

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale

This movie dissapointed me quite a bit. I expected a lot more from the theatrical trailer that was played on TV. Jason Statham is an excellent actor and in my opinion, this wasn't very well directed. The filming was great, and the picture quality as well, but it played off being the next "Lord of the Rings" and was far below that great trilogy. It had some good parts, but as a whole, not what I expected. It copied LOTR too much and has some ok special effects, but the acting, whether directed to or not fell short and that is what makes this film a disappointment. The story line was too crammed together and did not seem plausible. If he was just a "Farmer" how did he get all those skills? If my son was killed, I would be crazy with greif--the brief, forced crying from the mother was hard to swallow. I like 'B' grade films and this was one of them.
