My First GPS Navigator

Created: 09/06/08
I recently took a job that involved extensive travel, so I decided to invest in a GPS navigation system. The Navigon 2100 seemed to have the best features for the price so I bought a used one on eBay. This is my first auto navigation system. I've had it for two months now. I have to say, I won't go without one ever again. It's not perfect, but it sure beats squinting at paper maps, stopping to ask directions and navigating confusing interchanges. I can enter my next day's appointments into the unit while at home and regardless of which stop I go to first, I can get instant directions to the next stop I choose. That's way cool. I don't always agree with the route the Navigon plots, but it's no big deal. I just go the way I want and it re-routes to accommodate me. Sometimes it gets annoying when I change a route. It tells me to turn around at every cross street I approach. When that happens I just turn it off for a while. Try that with your wife! Ha! The 3D views of interchanges really help me on busy interstates and driving downtown. It gives me plenty of time to get into the proper lane to exit. The speaker on this model is very effective, but so far I haven't found a quick way to mute the thing. The touch screen is easy to use, but it still takes about six taps on the screen to turn the volume all the way down. My only criticisms are that the auto fill in feature takes too long to process every letter you type in for street names, cities, etc. or to scroll down the list of suggested locations. I guess that's because it's searching the entire national directory of addresses. I'd like it to limit my searches to just the state I'm in. That would speed things up. And if an address is not in the database, sometimes it's difficult to program it to get me into the general area. The screen is very easy to see in bright daylight, nothing like my cell phone display. When I first turn it on, it acquires the satellite links in just a minute or two. But it can't find them when I'm inside a home or office. I guess they're all like that. The built in battery is a great feature. It lets me program with my destinations into it while sitting in my office without having to plug it in. And I can carry the GPS with me after I park in a large complex and it will guide me to the specific building I'm looking for! The Navigon is so helpful, I've decided to save up for a more advanced model that lets me take cell calls through the unit and even broadcasts turn by turn directions through my car's stereo!

navigon 2100 used gps

this gps was in great condition. there were no scratches on the unit and everything was in its original packaging and appeared to all be there including the warranty papers. The Navigon 2100 is relatively simple to operate once you get the feel for the menu screens. GPS navigation was incredibly accurate at pin pointing current location. The Map information seems a little bit outdated in my area but there have been some considerable changes as far as businesses and some routes in recent years. There is a Current map service available from the manufacturer but costs 80 bucks which from talking to some associates with different GPS systems this is an affordable price for such service. One major glitch that I have found with the unit so far is once in a while it says that the SD card has been removed when its still seated in the port. Not really sure what causes that but it has only happened twice and not during navigation so far. the virtual mapping is really great on this unit for the price. I researched some info on this model and read about how people didnt like the gray scheme of the mapping. When I tested this item I didn't notice this gray scheme too much because there were many other colors implemented in the maps. I checked the software update on my unit and discovered that I have the current version of software. I am thinking perhaps the gray tones were updated in the newer version of software because I really dont see any monotone colors like I read in other reviews. seating the unit on the mounting bracket was not as hard as some said it was however removing it proved a little cumbersome and takes a little effort. voice to text is plenty loud when you turn up the volume. I was able to hear the voice just fine over the sounds from the car traveling down the road. Only flaw I seen in the text to voice was that on some street names it has difficulty pronouncing the proper pronunciation of the street. For example one such road was named Lakin (pronounced lake-in) the text to voice prounced it as "lack-in". but I have seen this same problem in other text to voice programs such as on cell phones etc. I think its just the limitation of the technology in the software because after all its attempting to pronounce the word as it is written but may not be correct if its a name and not a word. I admit when I first seen this road I too pronounced it as "lack-in" till my wife who lived here for some time corrected me on the pronunciation. If your looking for a GPS navigator on the market at an affordable price look into getting a Navigon 2100. It seems to be a very reliable GPS at a affordable price there are probably better ones on the market but this one has a lot of bells and whistles that you would normally find in higher dollar systems and I like the color and design and performance of this one so far. I cant really compare this one to the rather popular Garmin Nuvi's because I havent really seen these in action enough to compare. I know one associate that has one and from what I seen of it I felt the Navigon 2100 was better in appearance and display but maybe its just my opinion. I would recommend trying to compare before choosing between the two if this is the case but you will probably pay more for the Nuvi.

Great GPS and inexpensive

Created: 03/03/08
I bought one of these for my wife at Christmas, of course I had to "test" it to make sure the interface would be easily picked up. This unit does more than most units costing at least twice as much.

Pros:
good graphics- the 3d map at difficult interstate interchanges is wonderful

decent voice announcements - can't change the voice, but it is pleasant and

Polite reminders when exceeding the posted speed limits "caution"

Text to speech: yes it says the street names clearly and mostly accurately

Multiple point routing: you can put a number of stops on you route

Extremely user friendly and simple to learn to use

Cons:
As most reviewers state, the key pad for typing addresses is slightly small, but not difficult to use. I use a pen or pencil. An included stylus would be nice, but I'd probably lose it.

Satellite is sometimes slow to acquire, but not as bad as pro reviewers would have you believe

This is a great unit even with it's minor short comings. To get the same features in Garmin or Tom Tom, you would spend well over $500.00 If you are looking for a very good GPS unit and not wanting to spend a small fortune for advertising, buy this unit or one of it's siblings.

Having used this unit for 5 months, I would highly recommend it and if you buy it on Ebay it is an even better bargain!

Navigon 2100 the best product for the price.

Created: 09/03/08
I have purchased this to take on a trip to Disney World (Orlando Fl)from Illinois. Looking at the options the Navigon 2100 gave and the price you can't beat it. I looked at alot of gps systems not mentioning any names but they just couldn't match up. Text to speech is the main reason I purchased this, thats telling you the street name and when to turn. Most of the gps systems don't have this, they have speech that says turn in 200 feet. Oops there went my street! The Navigon 2100 has a 3 1/2" screen that alot of people said it is small. I had no problem typing in my destination at all or the visual sight of the screen. This has alot of options for the price. This one that I have purchased also has the traffic report on it, which does not come with every Navigon 2100. You can purchase that for about an extra $100.00. I would recomend this if you drive constantly it will reroute you around slow traffic or accidents. All of the towns and or cities we drove through the Navigon 2100 was right on the location we were at, Atlanta Georgia was very hecteck to get through. If I didn't have the Navigon Gps I would of been lost very easily. When you stop off of your course (gas or food)it will reroute and put you back on track to your destination. I really enjoyed having this gps while on our travel for vacation. One thing that I wasn't happy with is the battery does not last long about 3 hours. Most of the time it was just pluged in anyway. Thats propably the only fault to this system. I reveiwed alot of them and I hope this helps you like others helped me reading the reveiws. Good luck
