The best vampire movie ever
Created: 05/06/09
Widely and correctly considered the best vampire movie ever, Katherine Bigelow's masterpiece never uses the word "vampire". The first movie to feature her very original movie-making style, this movie's mood and characters grip you from the start. The action starts right away, with a young cowboy picking up (or so he thinks) a young vampire girl. She likes him enough to bite, but not bleed him, so he can join her band of blood-sucking killers. Every actor in this movie is totally convincing and their characters are well fleshed-out, even some with minimal roles. The score in the background keeps you wondering what's going to happen next, and the barroom scene is simply incredible.
The extras on this DVD are interesting, mainly serving to explain how the movie got made and the actors got selected.
The main thing you're left wondering after viewing this movie, and others like "Point Break", is why Katherine Bigelow isn't as renowned as any other director in Hollywood.

Cult Fave, Modern Vampire Masterpiece!
Created: 02/09/06
If you read my other reviews you will see I love bad horror movies, this is not one of those. I love this movie, but this is not a bad movie, not even a so-bad-it-is-good movie, it is simply a great vampire film. Low budget but great production values, does not date itself as much as the rest of the horror movies made at the time (1987) because this movie is about the story not (just) about the gore and guts.
Farm guy is bitten by a vampire and he joins their "family" so as to keep is real family safe. Kathryn Bigelow directed and stars Adrian Pasdar, Lance Henriksen and the ever-entertaining Bill Paxton. Get the 2 disc edition for tons of extras and a great film transfer. Highly recommended not just to horror fans, this is a "tension" movie that is solid all the way through.

"Great 80's Horror!"

Adrian Pasdar, Bill Paxton, and Lance Henriksen star in Kathryn
Bigelow's 1987 horror film. A young cowboy becomes part of a
gang of vampires making him one of them. I like this film and
think it's underrated. This 2-disc set has good picture and
sound plus neat extras. I recommend this great 80's horror
film.

Near Dark (2002, DVD)
This is one of the most boring and bad movie I see in my hole life!
Great cast, Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen (I meet him personalie earlie this year and talk aboat his earlie movies, he is a very nice man). But they can not hold up this thin story about vampires... This is a real bad movie. I love horror movies, but this one is so bad so, I cant find wolds for it. Dont see this one. If you like Lance henriksen, see, Jennifer 8 or Alien etc or do you like my favorite actor Bill paxton, see Apollo 13, Vertikal limit, he had a small roll in Miami Vice, very, very young, that´s wasfun to see him so young!
But for be back, Choose another movie than this! Don´t get in the trap as I did=one very tasty dvd-folder!!!for this is a crap movie and more for tv and for produce for dvd or blue-ray or so!

Fun Vampire Flick
Created: 01/12/06
Lance Henrickson and Bill Paxton team up again in this cult classic about a young cowboy slowly becoming a vampire. A great movie when you're in the mood for a horror flick and want to have some fun. I personally give it a 5 but gave it a 4 here because it is kind of a B movie, and I mean that in the best way possible.
