Album NotesRecorded At BMV Studios, New Jersey. All lyrics written by Biz Markie.Personnel: Biz Markie (vocals).Recording information: BVM Studios, NJ.Photographer: George DuBose.Unfortunately, I NEED A HAIRCUT is best remembered as a record that made things difficult for rap artists. After the album's release, Biz Markie was slapped with a lawsuit by Gilbert O'Sullivan for the unauthorized sampling of his "Alone Again Naturally" on the Biz's "Alone Again." Sullivan won, the record was pulled, and a new ruling prompted all record companies to clear hip-hop samples before their release on record. Following this fiasco, Biz Markie slipped in popularity, and has kept a low profile ever since. The 1995 re-release of I NEED A HAIRCUT appears without "Alone Again," but still contains the qualities that make Biz Markie great--his sly humor, his facility with off-the-cuff freestyle raps, and his exuberant, playful persona. Spinning out goofy narratives and metaphors with apparently effortless ease, Biz Markie drops cultural references ("Let Go My Eggo"), nostalgic folk wisdom ("What Comes Around Goes Around"), and schoolyard humor ("Toilet Stool Rap"). The inventiveness of Markie's wordplay and delivery (his enunciation suggests that he's just woken up from a nap, or taken a shot of Novacane) prevails, making I NEED A HAIRCUT a fine, lost addition to the Biz's small, essential catalogue.
