Product description

Synopsis
First published in 1958, this raw, devastatingly haunting Holocaust memoir is Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel's best known work. After the German army invades, they first confine the Jewish community of Sighet, Transylvania, into a ghetto, and then pack them into cattle cars bound for the concentration camps. Fifteen-year-old Eliezer and his father, alone after the Nazis take away his mother and sisters, experience unbearable horrors at Birkenau, Auschwitz, and Buchenwald that undermine Elie's faith in God and come close to destroying his humanity. This new translation, which hews more closely to the original Yiddish text than previous editions, was chosen for Oprah's Book Club in 2006.

Publisher's Note
A New Translation From The French By Marion Wiesel

Night is Elie Wiesel’s masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. This new translation by Marion Wiesel, Elie’s wife and frequent translator, presents this seminal memoir in the language and spirit truest to the author’s original intent. And in a substantive new preface, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man’s capacity for inhumanity to man.

Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz and Buchenwald; it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be.

Industry Reviews
"NIGHT is the most devastating account of the Holocaust that I have ever read. It is devastating first because of its simplicity....The second reason NIGHT is incomparably devastating has less to do with the facts of Wiesel's story than with the way he tells them. The book is exquisitely constructed....One has the sense of merciless experience mercilessly distilled to its essence."

"The book that always makes me weep is 'Night' by Elie Wiesel, because it brings up emotions of sorrow, horror and anger. And the book that unfailingly cheers me up is also 'Night' by Elie Wiesel, because it shows me that there is never an excuse for not trying to overcome evil, and that there is no situation from which we cannot emerge with a determination to be productive."
Washington Post Book World - Alan M. Dershowitz (12/10/1995)

"The seminal story of a child the Germans intended to murder, more to the point than the partial narrative of 'The Diary of Anne Frank' since it describes the place of Anne Frank's doom."
New York Times Book Review - Cynthia Ozick (04/13/1997)

"Wiesel has taken his own anguish and imaginatively metamorphosed it into art."
Saturday Review - Curt Leviant

"What I maintain is that this personal record, coming after so many others and describing an outrage about which we might imagine we already know all that it is possible to know, is nevertheless different, distinct, unique....Have we ever thought about the consequence of a horror that, though less apparent, less striking than the other outrages, is yet the worst of all to those of us who have faith: the death of God in the soul of a child who suddenly discovers absolute evil?"
Francios Mauriac

"To the best of my knowledge no one has left behind him so moving a record."
Alfred Kazin

"As a human document, 'Night' is almost unbearably painful, and certainly beyond criticism."
Commentary - A. Alvarez

"A slim volume of terrifying power."

LIFE CHANGING BOOK!!!!!

Created: 23/08/06
I am your typical average American male. I read only the books I had to in school, and read none at home, outside of the sports page. With my sister sick, and spending a lot of time in waiting rooms, I set out to get a book. I grabbed this book and couldn't put it down after paying for it. I have since started Wiesels book "Dawn", and will get "Day" after that. This book will let you know what a young kid was truly feeling in the concentration camps. Who ever wrote the previous review, obviously didn't read the same book. He also needs to take his own advice, because he seems to have his own amount of hate built up inside. This is one of those books that after you read it, you want others to read it as well. I hope this helps, and God Bless you all.

Night by Elie Wiesel

After watching Mr. Wiesel on OPRAH... I thought this book would be a necessary read for anyone who is human... the need to understand why so many white men seem to have such a need for controll over others... such rage in their hearts... and the suffering so many millions has gone through... but somehow I felt cheated... maybe I expected a much thicker book... and let us never forget that the Jewish community was not the only ones who died in the camps... their were others... I find a twisted interest in Hitler... why did he need to concur to rise to power...? Why do white men have this breed in them... I am caucassion but never understood it... and why do so many hateful people hid behind religion... religious people used to be good people... now they use Christ as both sword and shield... hate, sepertism, prejudice, anger... they have no moral or lawful right to deny gays rights, they are not god and if they think there is no difference between their sepertism and Hitler's - you are out of your minds.... hate is hate... I think Jesus would spit in the faces of those full of such anger and intimidation the white supieror race who hids their true KKK roots behind him.

Night by Elie Wiesel

There are not that many books out there that could touch me the way this book did. Not only is Mr. Wiesel telling you his story, he draws you in in a way that you feel like you are right there beside him. This is a must read book.

I bought it because I needed it for school.

I didn't want to borrow Night from the library because I want my own to do annotations in. Besides the sticky residue on the cover, the book is in perfect condition. I finished Night in about 4 hours, so that's in one sitting. It's better if you read it in one sitting to get the actual "feel." The story is beautiful detail and the ending is sure to bring tears to your eyes.
