The zombie film that started it all
Created: 12/07/07
George Romero's cult classic about the dead coming back to life and feeding on the living is sure to frighten you.
Filmed on a shoestring budget, in black and white and often using members of the crew to act as extras (zombies) during the filming; this film is the granddaddy of zombie films. By virtue of how it was filmed, including the liberal use of ketchup as blood, (in B&W it does look like blood), the film has often been given the "B film" status. This doesn't detract from the fact that the story is straight forward, the acting is passable, and the cinematography good.
The events unfold over the course of an afternoon, into the evening and overnight through to the next morning. You can only hope that the gruesome zombies that make up this nightmare will all disappear with the approaching daybreak. The ending is a shocker.
The film still plays to packed repertory film houses, testimony to this truly being a cult classic. Romero went on to film the sequel to this movie: Dawn Of The Dead, another classic zombie fest. Instead of a farmhouse, the heroes/victims are trapped in a shopping mall. The premise is the same, the tag line for Dawn is "When there is no room left in Hell, the dead shall walk the earth."
Both of these films have been remade, and numerous zombie "sequels" abound, but nothing can compare to the one that started it all. It predates the genre of 'slasher' films that were all the rage in the late 70's and 80's.

Night Of The Living Dead Reissue
Created: 03/01/09
Night of the Living Dead has been released on so many formats it is often hard for people to track. Collectors like to get them all and this often drives up the market price for certain versions and formats. Most formats however, are all the same. Though you will notice that they all have artwork that is different. If you are looking for a simple version most are just that. There are only a few that have a wide range of features. Some will have both the color and the black/white versions on them.
You can never be wrong picking up any copy of this classic, regardless of what it has on it or what format it is in.

The originator, and still one of the best

Night of the Living Dead
I still enjoy watching this movie every now and then just to remind myself what started it all and how far we've come.
Night of the Living Dead is amazing. It might feature some cheesy performances and very little special effects (it was the 60's) but George A. Romero took an idea and turned it into an instant classic. NotLD is Zombie horror at it's finest. Romero had a small budget and little special effects and he still managed to make one of the scariest movies ever made.
Final Verdict:
4/5
