Diffie's 8th album, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, re-establishes him as a top singer (and writer) of traditional country material. He simply wallows in heartbreak, in a voice that often recalls greats like George Jones and Lefty Frizzell. In the bitter "Are We Even Yet," he recounts how he and his lover can't stop hurting each other. The rollicking "It's Always Something" finds him dismayed that everything reminds him of his old love. This isn't a depressing album however--there are also plenty of positive love songs, like the gorgeous "Not In this Lifetime" and the romantic "I'm the Only Thing I'll Hold Against You." The standout, though, is another heartbreaker--"Don't Our Love Look Natural." In this ultra-classic ballad, the narrator and his ex attend a funeral at which the "corpse" is their love, which has "faded in its prime/and died before its time." Few modern country stars could pull off a song like this, but Diffie does it with ease. In rejecting novelty in favor of real emotion, Diffie makes A NIGHT TO REMEMBER unforgettable.
