Fisheye Fun: Nikon AF DX 10.5mm f/2.8G ED-IF Lens -
Created: 11/05/10
The Nikon AF DX 10.5mm f/2.8G ED-IF Lens is a professional grade fish-eye lens with an extra wide f/2.8 aperture that allows a lot of light to pass through the lens.
Fisheye lenses are fun and create an unsual perspective that can best be described as looking through the peep hole on the front door of someone's home. Fisheye lenses exaggerate the distance between objects, and capture a nearly 180 degree scope of what you're shooting. So if someone is standing next to you they might be in the shot.
Some people like to correct the distortions made by a fisheye lens, but that takes away from some of the fun. The odd perspective is what makes fisheye lenses so much fun.
This particular fisheye will work on all Nikon DSLRs. If you are using a D40, D40x, or a D60 you will only have manual focus capabilities but otherwise it will work fine. And if you're shooting with a D3 or D700, you will have to shoot in DX mode severely cropping the size of your photos down to 5 megapixel, but it will work fine.
Seriously if you are shooting with an FX (full frame) camera such as the D3 or the D700, you should choose Nikkor 16mm f/2.8 because you will have all the same fisheye fun with none of the DX crop on your sensor.
This is an excellent fisheye lens with zero vignetting and stunning tack sharp focus. It's fast, light, and fun. A great buy. You will not regret it.

Although I've just begun using my 10.5 Fisheye for DX I am so extremely pleased with the photo quality, flexibility of the lens offers for creative shots, and its small size.
I bought this lens to give me some new range of motion for my wedding photography. I'm so excited to be able to use this lens in my upcoming weddings. Its just such a fun element to introduce. I will say when I first pulled it out of the box I was really disappointed that it doesn't automatically focus on my D5000 but since, I have gotten more comfortable in manually focusing. I have yet to use it in low light situations but by then I hope to have a good enough handle on focusing that I'll be able to readily read the layout on the lens and know where to go from there.
As far as lens size is concerned, its so much smaller than I thought it would be. Its smaller than a standard 18-55mm lens. Also, the lens doesn't stick out very far at all which is super helpful. I was afraid I may scratch it accidently but the built in hood does a good job at protecting it.
I would recommend buying the photoshop plugin that allows you to adjust the fisheye images to look more proportionate. Not that the lens does a bad job, but for someone like me who wants to shoot people, the plugin helps eliminate skewed faces and it works fantastic. I'm quite pleased with my new lens.

So far, I really like this lens. I have mostly been using it for architectural photos as well as pictures of the kids and it is a lot of fun to use. The auto focus is fast and the images come out sharp and with nice color. I mostly use it outdoors so having it Nano coated would have helped a bit, but overall I would recommend this if you are looking for a high quality fisheye lens for your Nikon.

A new and undiscovered point-of-view

This fisheye lens designed specifically for DX format is amazing. It gives a full-framed picture rather than another fisheye lens that would just give a circle in the image. It is small making it portable and more likely to carry with you especially since this lens distorts things nicely like seeing through a fish's eye. Make sure to look up fisheye pictures and you'll see why people buy lens like this.

Nikon stays at the cutting edge with this gem of a fish

Nikon's 10.5mm full-frame fisheye is a gorgeous bit of engineering. THhis is the smallest fisheye I have ever used, and it is a great performer. This lens is sharp from edge-to-edge. Nikon capture can convert images to rectilinear format (straight lines) yielding an enormously wide, yet geometrically correct image. This lens is impervious to lens flare and ghosting, advantages of a fisheye design.
My only gripe is that the lens cap feels a bit cheap, but it works well and won't fall off. All in all the nicest full-frame fisheye yet, and definitely better than Canon's offerings (i.e. Canon has nothing like it).
