Softer than it Should Be

I spend a ton of money on Nikon glass. So when it came time to buy a teleconverter, I never considered anything but the Nikon.
Sadly, Nikon really didn't hit the mark with this one. There is significant light falloff at wide apertures (meaning you get vignetting from 2.8 up through about 5.6) which pretty much defeats the purpose of super-fast tele lenses. You can adjust that out in post if you shoot raw, but that's a major pain in the backside.
On my 70-200mm 2.8 AF-S VR, the entire field of view is front-focused, and Nikon claims it cannot be adjusted. In order to get around this problem, I have to manually focus, which is a waste of the AF-S speed. I even traded it in for a different one with the exact same result.
I also have the 1.4x tele from Nikon and it doesn't share any of these shortcomings, so I'd recommend you go with the 1.4x instead of the 2.0x.
If you don't mind manually focusing and adjusting vignette in post, you could get away with using this thing, and it's certainly cheaper than a 400mm 4.0, but buy at your own risk.

The TC-20E-II is the 4th generation of AF-S/I teleconveters from Nikon, All the TC20's are opically excellent however they are speclialized teleconverters designed for Nikon's professional telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses. They are NOT general purpose teleconverters intended to make normal lenses telephoto lenses.
The design intent is to allow a photographer to carry a 300 2.8 AF-I or AF-S and this teleconverter to give the photographer a 600 5.6 lens. Or similar effects with the Nikon 400 2.8 (800 5.6) or the 600 F4 (1200 F11)
As such this teleconverter works extremely well, it also works well for for lenses like the 70-210 VR, in this application it is a little soft in the corners and 'pixel peepers' will not be happy but it gives the working photographer a compact and lightweight 140-420 5.6 Zoom with outstanding bokeh which will make the client happy.
This teleconverter's mount is engineered to prevent mounting of incompatible lenses. So if the lens does not fit it is not compatible with the teleconverter.
In short if you have Nikon professional series telephoto lenses this teleconverter expands your horizons at a reasonable price

Nikon TC-14E II Teleconverter

Excellent lens to use with Nikon 70-200mm, f/2.8 VRII lens. The TC-14E makes it a longer lens but does not diminish quality and sharpness of the image.

Found it is not useful with my lens. Only a few lens can be used with this teleconverter and most range in the $2K to $4k range.
