Fast and Quality Optics

I owned this lens since when it first came out in the market and have used it for about 8 months now. I'm not going to go any detailed specs here but I'm going to say a few things about the lens in real life.
Cons: It's expensive and heavy. But as you know, f/2.8 zoom lens in this class is pretty much the same with other brand. Nikon lens are fairly expensive compare to Sigma, Tamron brands fitted to Nikon camera and at the end, you get what you paid for.
This newly introduced 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S has special coating on the glass, they call it "NANO" coating and I've noticed that this lens produces less purple fringe(chromatic aberration) than my other older Nikon lens without "NANO" coating.
Even at f/2.8 wide open, it still produces sharp images and makes nice bokeh background. Focuses fast and virtually silent when focusing. I just wish they had put VR(Vibration Reduction) on this unit and it would have been perfect!
It's pretty big too, so I had to get a new bag to fit this and the lens hood nicely.
If you want exceptional quality lens in 24-70mm range for your Nikon, look no further. This is the one.
Hope this was helpful.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 ED Lens (Refurb)
Created: 11/04/10
This lens fills the gap in my inventory and I think it will become my "Go To" lens for portraiture and general work with my D300. I have just finished shooting family portraits for a local event and was very happy with the general handling and results. This lens focuses fast, near silently, and sharp. The resulting 36-105mm focal length in dx format seems near perfect. Previously I had been using 17-55mm (dx result 24-82mm) but felt I had to get too close to my subjects, especially with complex and physically deep lighting set ups. A 70-200mm works but is much more a handful.
My lens does zoom very smoothly And I appreciate the lens barrel does not turn during focus or zoom, making use of polarizing filters much easier.
This lens does not have Nikon's VR image stabilization. Not much of an issue at shutter speeds over 1/100 sec. But it would be a nice touch.
This was a refurbished unit with Nikon's 90 day warrantee and Cameta Camera's extension to a full year. I was somewhat worried the lens would not come with the case or lens hood. Cameta Camera's listing of "What is included" did not mention these items. The price was low enough that i could buy them separately and still save. I was very happy that everything was included (case and hood too) that a new lens would come with, less the Nikon OEM box and no 5 year US warrantee card.
This is a Pro Quality lens and I am very happy with it. Good purchase.

Amazed by the amazing Nikkor 24-70!
Created: 11/06/10
This is truly the pinnacle of all of Nikon's professional lenses, at least for me it is. The focal range goes from pretty wide to the long end of normal, which is where most of my photography is, so this lens is pretty much glued to my camera now. Some folks claim that the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm is heavy, but I think it's actually rather light, considering all of its components. This lens is a must-have! I used to have a Tamron 28-75mm, which was a decent lens, and this Nikkor just completely blows it out of the water! I will never settle for less than the best after using this lens. It even gives perfect pictures from my old-fashioned D200. :)
PROS:
- AF-S is extremely speedy
- Works on all Nikon digital SLRs and some Nikon film SLRs
- Sharp at all apertures and most ISO settings
- Easy to handhold
- Contrasty, even wide open
- Color rendition is spot-on accurate
- Built tough but remains aesthetically and cosmetically pleasing
CONS:
- Price point is way higher than the comparable Canon 24-70
- No aperture ring so cannot be used on older Nikon film cameras
The Nikkor is better than the Canon but not $500 better. Unfortunately, that's what you get with economies of scale. It is still worth buying and owning for a long, long time and is the ideal portrait lens!

Reluctant upgrade
Created: 08/10/08
I own the Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 VR lens for the Fuji S5 Pro digital SLR as a secondary and backup outfit. After using this combination for the first time on an entire wedding as a secondary shooter for another photographer, and after processing the images on my computer, I detected an inordinate amount of paralex distortion even at closer focal lengths, as well as overall mediocre image quality and difficulty auto focusing in dimly lit situations. I decided to upgrade to a faster medium range zoom Nikon and, after reading nothing but rave reviews on the B&H website, decided on the Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8G ED AF-S. I'll keep the 18-200mm as a back up lens simply because it's a very convenient focal length range for certain situations.

The perfect Professional Quality Primary Lens
Created: 05/11/10
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens is my favorite and first choice. It's got great wide to mid range focal length with fast aperture speed for shooting in low light situations. Combined with Nikon's great Nano coated ED glass, it's the perfect professional level primary lens for me when I'm using my full frame Nikon D3.
