Album Notes
Compilation producers: Paul Heck, Jessica Kowal, Chris Mundy.Includes liner notes by Chris Mundy and John Carlin.Featuring premiere American "alternative" bands, NO ALTERNATIVE is the third in a series of AIDS awareness and fundraising productions by The Red Hot Organization. Proceeds from this release will be donated to the Red Hot Organization to benefit AIDS charities worldwide. Track 19 featuring Nirvana is not listed on the CD. Sonic Youth and Jonathan Richman appear only on the cassette version of NO ALTERATIVE.A mixture of B-sides, outtakes, live tracks, and newly recorded songs, No Alternative was the most successful benefit album of 1993, both commercially and artistically. Exceptional songs from Nirvana, Bob Mould, Urge Overkill, Smashing Pumpkins, American Music Club, and Pavement enhance fine outtakes from Buffalo Tom and Matthew Sweet, strengthen Uncle Tupelo and Soul Asylum's strong covers, and make the weak live tracks from the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and the Breeders tolerable. However, nothing can save the Goo Goo Dolls' atrocious pop-metal take on the Rolling Stones' "Bitch." Still, that's only one song out of 19, making No Alternative a worthy purchase. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

No Alternative, No Doubt Rocks

Created: 17/12/08
I bought this, because the cassette I bought of it back in high school finally gave up the ghost.
It's an excellent example of what a grand compilation should be:
A variety of artists and rock music that all hold together as an solid album.
The only problem I have with the cd version, is the Sonic Youth song "Burning Spear" is only available on the cassette version. But don't let that stop you from buying this cd. Because the other 19 songs more than make up for the missing SY song.
Album highlights are provided by Pavement, Matthew Sweet, Barbara Manning, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Goo Goo Dolls, American Music Club, and Straightjacket Fits. These are the songs I find myself repeating over and over. The rest are all solid rockers as well.
Do yourself a favor, and buy this disc, cuz it usually goes for cheap and you cant beat cheap awesome music.
