Movie synopsis

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart are charming in the romantic comedy NO RESERVATIONS. Zeta-Jones stars as Kate, an executive chef at a popular restaurant in New York City's Greenwich Village. She is so dedicated to her job that she has no time for a personal life; she even brings gourmet cuisine to her therapist (Bob Balaban), feeding him food rather than opening up her soul. But her life changes when her sister dies in a car accident, leaving Kate to take care of her sister's young daughter, Zoe (Abigail Breslin, from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE). Suddenly, Kate is responsible for more than just fancy dishes; she is responsible for another human being, which confounds her. After taking a few days off, she returns to her kitchen, only to find that the restaurant owner, Paula (Patricia Clarkson), has hired another chef to assist Kate, a playful, talkative, talented man named Nick (Aaron Eckhart) who likes listening to opera while he works (Kate considers that a major distraction) and so wins over the rest of the staff that Kate feels threatened. But deep down, she also feels a little attracted by the attention Nick pours on her. However, Kate is not sure she can mix being a mother, a master chef, and, perhaps, a lover. NO RESERVATIONS, based on the award-winning German film BELLA MARTHA (MOSTLY MARTHA) (Sandra Nettelbeck, 2001), is a satisfying soufflé of comedy and romance, directed by Scott Hicks (SHINE, SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS) and featuring a piano-based soundtrack by minimalist musician Philip Glass. And just as she did in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, Breslin will both charm and break viewers' hearts.

No Reservations About This LIghtweight Fare

Created: 10/07/08
A driven chef (the lovely Catherine Zeta-Jones) awaits a visit from her sister and niece (Abigail Breslin, the star of Little Miss Sunshine), but a traffic accident changes everything. Her sister dies, and Zeta-Jones, already in therapy (with Bob Balaban) is saddled with her niece. Topping off her problems is the arrival of sou chef Aaron Eckhart. The cooking scenes are cool, as is the growing romance between the two. A nice romantic comedy, although unlikely to challenge for an AFI Top 100 position!

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslan...what more can I say?!?!

An awesome support cast includes Patricia Clarkson.

We see self-centered, ‘Type A’ Chef Kate (played wonderfully by CZJ); suddenly grieving over a sister she loved and taking care and custody of a niece she hardly knows.

What throws a proverbial wrench in the works is the hiring of a new Sous Chef, Chef Nick (AE) by her boss.

Between learning that she can share her workload with Chef Nick (who has a totally different work ethic and style of cooking), and share her heart with niece Zoe...we are entertained to see CZJ's character turn 180 to understand that she can do both.

No Reservations

I bought this DVD because I saw this movie in the theatre and thought it was Outstanding. Is it a movie with tons of swearing, etc., like most are today? NO - so if you like that kind of thing you will be mighty disappointed. What this movie does show you is human life reality; someone you loves dies in a car accident, you may have to "step up" and love your niece, nephew, or godchild.
You may think you are the "best" at your job only to learn that someone else is just as good (better at some things than you are even) and that through it all the only thing that matters is love and family. Catherine Zeta Jones plays a great part in this movie; her tears and Zoe's tears are real and this is a down to eart great movie. Jeanne S.

ROMANTIC COMEDY!

Created: 10/02/08
This is a really cute romantic comedy. A top notch chef's life is turned upside-down when her sister is killed and she must now care for her niece and share her kitchen at an exclusive Manhattan restaurant with an unorthodox new asst chef. It's the perfect date movie. You'll laugh and you might get a little teary eyed, but you'll leave the movie in a really good mood. Absolutely worth seeing.+
