N95 4.5 rating- close to perfect smartphone
Created: 18/04/07
I'm a cell phone geek... It's my neverending quest to find the perfect cell phone. It hasn't been built yet, but this model is getting close to that perfect 5 score.
SCREEN: the screen is large and with 16m colors, quite vibrant. It's great that you can rotate the picture to landscape view. Definitely get a screen protector and to save battery life, you can dim the screen (tools>settings>personalisation>display).
CAMERA: Yesss-Lens cover! Superior 5 megapixel camera easy to use and takes excellent photos and video. I don't notice any lag, which others have complained about. I think it's great.
BUILD quality: My slider is well-built with no wobbles. (Some have loose sliders) NOT impressed with the plastic keyboard, navigational pad and the cheap clicky noises. I heard criticism on the quality but didn't think I'd feel that way. I do- and so will you! For a high priced phone, Nokia used cheap components. The keypad is a bit bigger than the N73 but still hard to text.
MUSIC, VIDEO and TV OUT- you can use a standard headphone jack, A2DP too! It comes with a cable to hook up to your TV (too cool) and the music player/sound quality is very good. Speakerphone is good. Lots of extras!
WEB BROWSING, WIFI- I love the ease of WIFI- (setting up access points are so simple), excellent web browser (no wap browser). A+++ rating
RADIO FREQENCY (RF)- Of course it's important that the phone works! It does! Very very good antenna- it even makes calls in one area that has no bars.
GPS- You need to be outdoors to access satellites and to get voice navigation you have to pay (subscribe). Downloading maps takes time. But I still like this extra function.
SYMBIAN OS- I love Series60v3. There are so many great programs and games- whatever you want you can find and use with this phone.
BATTERY- Bad. The phone sucks the life right out of the battery. Be prepared to charge it every day. We can only hope that Nokia gives us a better battery (like the awesome one on the N73).
So, my final score is a 4.5. Poor battery life and cheap external parts prevent it from getting a higher score. (And for the money, we expect more) Overall, very satisfied. I'll keep this phone until the E90 is released! LOL
Please feel free to email me with any questions.
Thanks for reading, hope it's helpful to you! :)

Nokia N95 8GB Cellular Phone
Created: 30/09/10
I bought one of these phones two years ago when they first came out and I paid around $800.00 for it and after owning it for awhile I found that it was worth every penny I paid for it. My wife wanted a new cell phone recently and I found the price had come down on the N95 to only $350.00 or so new and I was able to purchase a fairly nice used one for her for only $150.00 on ebay. I will tell you that I don't even know how to use all of the features on this phone yet after two years of owning it but it is the best phone I have ever had. I bought it mainly for the camera. It has a 5 megapixel camera with a zoom function and a Carl Ziess Lens. It takes wonderful pictures and it is always there when I come across that Kodak moment. In comparison to the lousy pictures my previous camera phones would take the N95 is off the charts. Next to the camera I like the audio quality the best. The audio is super clear and is also one of my favorite features of the N95. I have had cell phones since 1993 when the first Motorola flip phone hit the street. Most of the audio on my previous phones had something to be desired as in "I can hardly you." The reception of signal on the N95 is also off the charts. It has reception when all other cell phones fail. No walking around going "can you hear me now?" with this cell phone. I have my N95 connected to the AT&T network (more bars in more places) and I have fun watching my friends trying to make phone calls on their cell phones and when they can't get a signal then I hand then mine and they can't believe the reception and clarity on the N95. The phone has a lot of functions that I never use like the GPS and also the music capability it has. It boasts 8GB of memory so you can keep a lot of tunes in it. I understand it has an FM transmitter so you can go to your friends house and play your tunes through their stereo or you can play them through your car radio. I wouldn't know because I never tried it. It also has an FM radio which I have tried but I don't really use that feature much either. The screen is very large and clear and easy to read. I just love how easy this phone is to use. The only problem I have ever had with my N95 is that because it is a computer it can lock up on you. I have had this happen maybe three or four times in two years so this is not an issue that bothers me a whole lot. I kind of freaked out the first time it happened (I thought the phone was broken) but I opened the battery compartment and removed and reinstalled the battery and then it was business as usual. Again my first one of these phones cost me around $800.00 and now that they have come down in price they are really a bargain. You will not be disappointed. The only other thing I might add is that when you are shopping for one of these you will come across the ones that are made in China and I will tell you that these have no internet and no GPS. I don't know anything about the quality of them compared to the ones made in Finland etc. Obviously if you don't need the internet and GPS function you can save yourself some money. The battery life is also fantastic on this phone as in 9 days without charging on standby. I love it on a trip because I just let it run night and day and I don't have to charge it in the motel at night. I have kept my N95 mint in a leather case since day one. I have seen some of the used ones for sale with scratches on the screen and even the lettering worn off the battery cover.

The best phone I've ever owned
Created: 04/11/09
The Nokia N95 is not just a cell phone. It's truly a portable hand held computer that will keep even the most savvy geek happy. But its deceptively simple, straightforward user interface means even a less tech-savvy person can enjoy its many advanced features.
The raw specs: 3.5G UMTs/HSDPA radio, WiFi 802.11g with WPA2 support, internal GPS, and Bluetooth. Dual core ARM processor core, 128MB RAM and 160MB internal Flash for plenty of storage for applications and games. MicroSD card slot supports up to 16GB cards with the latest firmware. 3.5mm headphone jack accepts standard headphones as well as various accessories. And it has a dual slide, in which the slide can be moved up for the number keypad, or down to expose dedicated media player controls.
The phone comes LOADED with applications. A web browser supporting Javascript and Flash Lite, which renders pages in full rather than minimalized versions. An Adobe PDF reader. A music player with an iPod-esque interface to present your music in an organized fashion. A Podcast tool which lets you subscribe to and download podcast content right to your memory card. The video player can play H264 or MPEG4 video up to 320x240 with AAC or MP3 audio. And of course the requisite contact list and messaging apps, however this messaging app also lets you check your POP3 or IMAP Email accounts - and reply to messages - right on your phone.
The LED backlit screen is top-notch and easily visible even in bright daylight. The speakers can get LOUD (and I do mean LOUD!) but still maintain clarity with minimal to no distortion. Supported in hardware are various 3D effects such as stereo widening, and also various ringtone morphing effects.
The 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera takes excellent photos and its video mode shoots 640x480 video at 30fps with excellent quality. This phone can easily replace those cheaper handheld camcorders being sold at retail. The only disadvantage is the LED flash, which can tend to make things look more washed out and pale. And it has a secondary VGA camera on the front, which can be used if your plan supports video calls.
Since the phone runs Symbian Series 60, a wide array of applications are available for it. For free, you can obtain a Shoutcast radio player (Mundu Radio), an IRC client (mIRGGI), Google Maps (which can use the internal GPS), YouTube, PuTTY, a vOIP and messaging client (Fring) and more. If you're a Python coder, you can even use PyS60 to write your own software for the phone. There's of course also commercial programs that do everything from read Word documents (QuickOffice) to provide a Windows file server of your phone's filesystem over the WiFi connection (SymSMB)!
The only disadvantages to this phone are its battery life - if you're using it a lot, it will run dry within a few hours - and an odd bug that causes all of your songs to appear in the ringtone selection window. You can avoid that by copying your ringtones to the internal flash and removing the memory card while assigning ringtones.
All in all, this phone is packed with features and is sure to please. Even the geekiest chatterbox will not tire quickly of this phone. I'd strongly recommend an extra battery or two if you plan to put a lot of use into it, but it is very well worth the price for the features and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful yet simple smartphone.

Not perfect - but close

This is an awesome array of technology on one tiny package.
PHONE: Nokia provides *the best* mobile phone interface on the market & the N95 has it too. This is the core functionality in the N95 and getting back to the phone or answering calls while using the rest of the phone's features is a one-button operation no matter what other mode the phone is in at the time. Call quality was excellent at all times. One quibble is the necessity to carefully place the speaker right on the ear, which took me a few calls to get used to doing. Once I got the hang of it - it was second nature.
CAMERA(S): This phone has two lenses; the main one is exposed by a manual slide opened with one finger; this is the lens used for 5MPxl still & DVD quality video recording. The second lens faces the user when in phone mode and appear to be for video-phone purposes. The main lens has a short focal length and though it allows zooming, it is best suited for portrait still shots or video taping of close-in action (think people around a table at a restaurant).
WEB-BROWSING: This works as well as small screen will allow; personally I would prefer a full PDA, but nothing beats being able to look up addresses etc on the web while on the fly - so his feature gets a thumbs up too. (For a phone the N95 has quite a big screen, so really I shouldn't complain.)
MENUS: Getting around and changing mode etc on the Nokia N95 was fairly easy given the large number of modes & things it can do. Nokia have provided a simple graphical interface which is quick & easy to learn and easy to use. This was no small feat, but great user interfaces are one of Nokia's strengths.
STURDINESS: The phone did not strike me as indestructible like some of the older Nokias. The front plate with the screen on it slides open for use as a phone to expose the keypad (and in the other direction to expose some camera/ video controls). The buttons have good tactile characteristics but have a very short travel which I thought would take some getting used to. That said, they had the distinctive Nokia 'click', and the physical interface and user expereince of the N95 all say 'quality'.
SUM UP: This is an amazing little phone; whoever carries it should have a case or cover for it to protect it from keys and other pocket hazards. Having a video recorder, camera, GPS navigation and web-browser whereever you go in a single device is huge.
