Movie synopsis

Faith, family ties, and marital fidelity are all put to the test in NOT EASILY BROKEN, a thoughtful African-American domestic drama based on the novel by mega-pastor T.D. Jakes. As the film opens, Dave Johnson (Morris Chestnut) sets the story to date: his marriage to Clarice (Taraji P. Henson), his dream of being a major league baseball player, and the couple’s shared love and faith. Ten years later, Dave’s dreams have been dashed by a career-ending injury, leaving Clarice’s success as a real estate agent to fuel their tony life. This leaves Dave feeling increasingly emasculated--a volatile situation further enflamed by Clarice’s criticism that Dave spends too much time coaching inner-city youths. This simmering tension boils over when the two are involved in a near-fatal car crash. Clarice’s subsequent physical rehabilitation compels her embittered mother (Jenifer Lewis) to move into the couple’s home and join Clarice in chastising Dave for ignoring his husbandly duties. To escape this daily barrage, Dave spends more and more time with divorcée Julie (Maeve Quinlan), the physical therapist who helps Clarice get back on her feet, as well as Julie’s young son. But when tragedy strikes, Dave and Clarice must finally confront their failing marriage and flagging faith, and reclaim the honesty and respect that once defined their life together. Director Bill Duke (SISTER ACT 2, COVER) balances relationship humor with heartfelt lessons in NOT EASILY BROKEN--an approach ably brought to the screen by an excellent cast--to show that when bad things happen to good people, they are often the challenges we need to find the best in ourselves and each other., Taraji P. Henson (THE FAMILY THAT PRAYS) and Morris Chestnut (THE PERFECT HOLIDAY) star in this relationship drama about a couple whose marriage is failing. NOT EASILY BROKEN is based on the book by T.D. Jakes, who also serves as a producer on the film.

Not Easily Broken

Created: 03/10/10
After years of disagreeing on what true happiness, success, and love really are, Dave (Morris Chestnut) and Clarice Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) have finally reached a breaking point in their marriage. When Clarice is severely injured (and crippled) in a car accident, her cackling mother Mary (Jenifer Lewis) intervenes. The obvious truth that more than just her injuries need immediate attention is exposed. Their odds of making it worsen as Clarice begins to see a physical therapist, and Dave develops a friendship with Julie (Maeve Quinlan) and her friendly teenage son Bryson (Cannon Jay). The acceptance and comfort Dave finds in them stirs his longing for a family and a passionate partner. Sadly, Bryson unexpectedly dies in a swimming accident, Dave and Julie's relationship closens and Clarice pulls farther away; they must confront whether their vows are or are not easily broken. Later on, Dave visits Julie after she calls him, and he comforts her in her grief. They begin to kiss, but Dave realizes it is Clarice he truly wants. The couple reunites once Clarice expresses to him the reasons for her mother having such a big input in their marriage. The reunite and Dave finds out that Clarice is pregnant

Loved it!

This is a great movie about the ups and downs of marriage. The message is inspiring and the actors did a good job. Whether you have been married or not, I am positive you will find something that you can relate to in this film.

Though this movie is based on T.D. Jakes' book, the movie does a good job in keeping this movie balanced so that non-religious people can enjoy. The diversity of the cast makes it even better as well.

I highly recommend this be purchased and added to your collection if you like movies like Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" this movie has some similarities.

i totally loved the movie. Great actors/actresses, great story which really hit home and touched my heart. Producer TD Jakes should continue to produce more movies like this one as it relates to many young couples today. I totally got the message and it gave me something to think about. Thanks again for another stunning movie. This movie is up there with the best.

Great movie about marriage and relationships

Created: 06/01/11
This is an excellent example of how relationships can break down when there is a breakdown in communcation between spouses. This is my 2nd favorite movie in this category of all time (Fireproof is #1).

I highly recommend you rent (or buy) this movie and keep it around to watch from time to time to remind all of us how we should treasure our spouses and honor them.
