Movie synopsis

Based on the celebrated novel by Nicholas Sparks, THE NOTEBOOK tells the story of a young couple who overcome insurmountable odds to experience the true power of love. In a modern-day nursing home, a kindhearted man (James Garner) reads a tender story to another patient (Gena Rowlands). The story begins during one glorious summer in small-town South Carolina in the early 1940s. Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) is a blue-collar log-mill worker who courts the wealthy and sheltered Allie Nelson (Rachel McAdams). Before long, sparks are flying and the pair is in love. But eventually Allie's snobby parents force their separation, and when World War II arrives, Noah heads overseas to serve his country. In the meantime, Allie becomes a nurse and falls for another man (James Marsden), to Noah's dismay. Nonetheless, he buys and fixes up the mansion he promised Allie he would one day restore, and when he and Allie reunite just before her wedding, their love blossoms once again. Decades later, in the nursing home, the story reaches its heartfelt conclusion. Directed with extreme sensitivity by Nick Cassavetes (son of costar Gena Rowlands), THE NOTEBOOK is aided immensely by the naturalistic performances of Gosling and McAdams, whose chemistry is palpable.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[I]t's easy to surrender to the swooning violins on the soundtrack....It helps that the film is lovingly crafted and extremely well-acted."
Movieline's Hollywood Life - Stephen Farber (06/01/2004)

"Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams break through the barrier to evoke high-strung, slightly crazed teenagers plunging headlong into first love....Their performances are so spontaneous and combustible that you quickly identify with the reckless sweethearts..."
New York Times - Stephen Holden (06/25/2004)

"[P]atiently told, impressively performed, and beautifully shot..."
Entertainment Weekly - Jeff Labrecque (02/11/2005)

"The performances respect the passion at the beginning and the sentiment at the end, not pushing too hard. It's a tear-jerker, but well-acted and deeply felt."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (02/04/2005)

Created: 03/02/09
Features Actors: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Joan Allen, James Gardner & Gina Rowlands.
Running Time:124 Min.
Rating: PG-13

For Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling), their love story is one fraught with heartache, passion, time, and destiny. But before we can get to that, flash forward decades to an older gentleman named Duke (James Garner) visits an elderly woman (Gina Rowlands) suffering from Alzheimer's in a nursing home. In the midst of her debilitating disease, he begins to read her a story, the story of Allie and Noah and how they met, fell in love, and discovered all the complications that go along with romance.

Noah is a mill worker still living with his father (playwright Sam Shepard) in a rundown house, while Allie comes from a long line of wealth and deals with her snobbish mother (Joan Allen, The Contender) who thinks that Noah isn't worthy of her status. When the summer comes to an end, Noah and Allie are forced to go their separate ways, yet never leaving each other's thoughts. Seven years later finds Allie engaged to a wealthy southern socialite (James Marsden) and Noah putting the finishing touches on a plantation farmhouse that he promised Allie he'd restore for her during their summer of love. Through a series of chance encounters, Allie and Noah meet once more and find the spark of their previous romance is still very much alive. This forces Allie to make a decision that will alter both her and Noah's lives…forever.

Created: 10/07/09
A thoughtful, emotionally rich film in which we see that great love, like deep faith, is forged on doubt, trials, and hardships. Only then does it deliver its deepest rewards.
A young woman comes to the coastal town of Seabrook, North Carolina in the 1940's to spend the summer with her family. Still in her teens, Allie Hamilton meets local boy Noah Calhoun at a Carnival. Though she is wealth and he a poor mill worker, during the course of one passionate and carefree summer in the South, the two fall deeply in love. Circumstances drive them apart but both continue to be haunted by memories of each other. When Noah returns home from the war years later, Allie is irrevocably gone from his life, but not from his heart.
