    Product description

    Synopsis
In THE NUMBER, Lee Eisenberg offers a "get real" approach to personal finance and retirement planning that simply asks that we determine a figure ("the number") that represents what we will need to live well on in our post-career lives. The number is a destination, and having determined it, we can then map out a pathway to our goal using common sense insights into good and bad money habits. Acknowledging the psychological impediments to planning ahead, such as procrastination and denial, Eisenberg offers practical advice on assessing our true financial worth. In an uncertain world, where pensions are disappearing, Eisenberg advises that we need to lay a foundation early so that we can have the good life later on.

Interesting reading but not presenting anything I didn't already know. Though we have been planning and saving since about age 30, how I wish we had started sooner. While I didn't learn any new, startling facts in this book, I enjoyed the humor and found my own conservative style a perfect match to the book's categories. I also am now disabled because of a successful kidney transplant(high school teacher told to avoid exposure to "crowds and infectious places"), MY retirement is coming a bit (!) sooner than expected. I recommend this as a good start to understanding of the retirement process and things that need to be examined. MY advice...START EARLY..but this book give a good starting point. Nothing too new or motivating here...it's kind of your traditional "save for retirement" book, but if it's your first, not bad. It didn't help me...I was light years ahead of the author's "plans" but it was decent. If you are advanced at all into planning for retirement, this is not recommended.
