The question is, who's next? And can Odd stop the new wave of violence before it starts?

    Publisher's Note
“The dead don't talk. I don't know why.” But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn. Maybe he has a gift, maybe it’s a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd’s otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different.

A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd’s deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.

    Today is August 14.

In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares—and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

    From the Hardcover edition.

Over the course of two days, Odd Thomas, his soulmate Stormy Llewellyn, and an assortment of allies make their way through a dark, terrifying world in which past and present, and life and death collide as they try to avert a cataclysm.

Over the course of two shattering days, Odd Thomas, his soulmate Stormy Llewellyn, and an oddball assortment of allies make their way through a dark, terrifying, and labyrinthine world in which past and present, fate and destiny, and life and death collide as they risk everything to avert a threatening cataclysm. Reprint.

Bought this book for my mother years ago as a book collection I was buying her for Christmas. She let me borrow it and I read it. Fell in love with the book, characters and Dean Koontz. Fast paced and quirky. Bought it for myself so I can read again!

    About The Book:

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Meet Odd Thomas. Sometimes the silent souls who seek Odd out want justice. Occasionally their otherworldly tips help him prevent a crime. But this time it's different. A stranger comes to Pico Mundo, accompanied by a horde of hyena-like shades who herald an imminent catastrophe. Aided by his sould mate, Stormy Llewellyn, and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Odd will race against time to thwart the gathering evil. His account of these shattering hours, in which past and present, fate and destiny converge, is a testament by which to live - an unforgettable fable for our time destined to rank among Dean Koontz's most enduring works.

    Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz

    Created: 28/12/10
After becoming an enthusiastic follower of Mr. Koontz's "Frankenstein" series, I decided to give his Odd Thomas a try, after hearing many positive reports about it from acquaintances and the Internet, and I'm glad I did. The aptly named "Odd" is a likeable character with a very peculiar talent-he can see and communicate with the dead (well, some of them, anyway) and this power gets him into some exciting scrapes...
In this story, the first of the series, 20-year-old Odd has bad vibes after seeing a strange man in the diner where he is a short-order cook-not because of anything very unusual about the fellow, but because he is surrounded by what Odd calls "bodachs", shadowy creatures which only he can see, and which only appear as a prelude to some tragedy. He is drawn to investigating the man, and uncovers a plot of immense evil that threatens many lives-unless the heroic Odd can stop it...
I loved the triphammer pace of the action and suspense of this novel, although the ending is not what I would have liked. I want to read the entire series and follow this strange young man into new adventures, in the books "Forever Odd", "Odd Hours", "Brother Odd", "In Odd We Trust", and "Odd is on Our Side".
Great reading courtesy of Dean Koontz!

    VERY GOOD READ!

    Created: 02/07/06
This is Dean Koontz at his best!!! The very compelling hero of the story is Odd Thomas(yes, that is his name). He is just and ordinary guy in a small town working an ordinary job as a short order cook.... but Odd has one extraordinary trait,,,,,he can see dead people. He interacts with the dead people very naturally as he has be used to seeing them and isnt frightened. The plot of the story keeps the reader interested and moves along quickly. There are a few segments that seems a little wordy but al in all a GREAT READ!

    ODD THOMAS

    Created: 04/11/08
I had read other Koontz novels and thought I'd try this one. Odd Thomas is the name of a rather eclectic character who sees ghosts and has a few other powers beyond the ken of the normal man. I really enjoy his sense of humor and have since read three other "Odd Thomas" novels. My only critique is that it is hard to believe a man as young as Odd is, twenty-one, can be so erudite and philosophical. His perspective is so mature compared to most of the young men in the world, but I have met a few who were about as complicated, so I guess he is just one of the rare exceptions. Certainly the genre of mystery/sci-fi is a most interesting way to present a plot!

    Excellent, Captivating READ!

    Created: 24/11/06
I received this book as a gift 3 days ago and finished it last night. It was difficult to put down. Dean Koontz held me captivated by his chararacter, Odd Thomas. Throughout the book it was suspenseful and thrilling, yet human and romantic. I especially loved that it was written in 1st person. The ending wowed me, caught me off guard, yet left me satsified, which is quite a feat, as most books have endings that leave me feeling like something was missing. Overall, this book is TERRIFIC and I cannot wait to read the next in the series, Forever Odd and the book that is new in the series, Brother Odd. If they are half as good as this first, they are definately worthy of their cover price.
