Album Notes
Originally released as a 2 LP set.Old Corrals & Sagebrush & Other Cowboy Culture Classics is a CD reissue of Ian Tyson's 1983 album Old Corrals & Sagebrush, plus all but three tracks from his self-titled album from 1984. Old Corrals was Tyson's first album devoted entirely to western material, and includes classics such as "Whoopee Ti Yi Yo" and "I Ride an Old Paint" (as "Leavin' Cheyenne"). The original composition "Alberta's Child" pays tribute to Canadian country star Wilf Carter, and "Gallo de Cielo" is an epic story-song written by the like-minded Tom Russell. "Night Rider's Lament," later revived on Nanci Griffith's Other Voices, Other Rooms, ends with a demonstration of Tyson's yodeling skills on the fade-out. The songs from Ian Tyson are similarly Western in theme, including the traditional "Colorado Trail." The electric guitar and pedal steel throughout give some of the songs a pure country rather than Western flavor, but the former folk artist (who started out as a rodeo rider) handles both styles convincingly. Tyson's contribution to the Canadian country music tradition may come as a surprise to those who remember him from his Ian & Sylvia days, but the world of Western music should be glad to have him. ~ Greg Adams

Outstanding Western Music!

Created: 08/06/09
If you enjoy Western music, mostly cowboy themed, you will love this album. And, if you are only going to buy one Ian Tyson solo CD, this is the one you should buy.

I've been a big fan of Ian Tyson since his Ian & Sylvia days. I consider his voice to be magnificent and his approach to his music really impresses me.

All of his solo albums have some great songs and performances, but this one --which is actually a combination of two vinyl releases -- has the highest percentage of really great songs. Of the 18 tracks on it, there are only 4 that I normally skip over. There are at least 5 on it that I consider to be masterpieces. Others must too, as I have heard several Western singers covering these songs or arrangements in their live acts. Heck, I "cover" them myself when I'm playing my guitar at a campfire gathering -- and I've noticed that several of the other players who join in with their acoustic instruments know them just as well.

If you'd like to try the genre, this is a good place to start. If you already like the genre, this one is a sure winner!

Old Corrals And Sagebrush & Other Cowboy ... - Tyson, I

Ian Tyson is one of the great cowboy singers. He sings some great old standards and cowboy ballads in a style that when you close your eyes, makes you think you are around the fire on the open plains with a plate of beans on your lap. If you like that new pop-country, then this is not your music. If you like REAL country music and real cowboys, (not cookie cutter pretty boys with 4 day old stubble and eye shadow with names like Toby, Kieth, Montgomery, Tim, and Alan) than this is for YOU!

Ian Tyson has a great voice and this traditional (for most part) cowboy music is great. I highly recommend this CD and "Cowboyography" or "All The Good Uns"! Happy Trails too you!
