Album Notes
With ONE MAN BAND, James Taylor becomes the third major musical icon, after Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell, to sign with the Starbucks-affiliated music label Hear Music for a new releases. Unlike Mitchell and McCartney, Taylor is using his fresh start to take a well-deserved retrospective look over the course of his career. ONE MAN BAND is a two-disc set incorporating a live concert and a documentary DVD. The DVD is an exhaustive work directed by filmmaker Sydney Pollack that mixes new live concert material and interviews with rare archival footage, including both vintage television appearances and, appropriately for a documentary about an artist who has treated his musical career as a lifelong running autobiography, home movies and personal photographs. True to the album's title, the live concert on the CD features just Taylor's warm, mellow voice and his soulful, folk-influenced acoustic guitar. Recorded live in front of a hometown crowd in the hills of western Massachusetts, these 19 songs stretch back over 40 years, all the way to his first single, "Something in the Way She Moves," and include fine renditions of all his most beloved songs as well as several wry anecdotes about them. ONE MAN BAND is an intimate portrait nicely executed.DVD Features:LIVE CONCERT WITH BONUS FOOTAGE & OUTAKES

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 -- [T]his is an effective summary of Taylor's life and work....Taylor's performance throughout is immaculate but full of warmth...
Uncut

3.5 stars out of 5 -- Taylor's supple baritone remains a wonder of intimacy, and it finds its match in the effortless intricacy of his fingerpicking.

Intimate setting for James Taylor's classic songs

Created: 15/06/10
I'm a long-time fan of James Taylor, and already owned his Live album -- yet the "One Man Band" CD-DVD provided a simpler presentation of his work, with minimal extra musicians and vocalists on the tracks. What I appreciate about the DVD are the interesting stories about the songs' backgrounds -- such as "Sweet Baby James" is a song he wrote for his very young (at the time) namesake nephew. ~~ It's wonderful to see James Taylor continue in his musical career, sharing his talents to inspire and entertain.

My new FAVORITE!! An instant CLASSIC!!

Created: 15/11/07
As James explains, this cd/dvd set is a "primer" of his music -- by stripping it down and going back to the basics: his amazing voice, guitar and piano. I cannot emphasize enough how beautiful it is, an amazing compilation/distillation of his very best songs. Plus, it's 19 tracks and 2 hours of music! What more could you ask for? I was lucky enough to be in the front row of his "One Man Band" show in Los Angeles, so I was very familiar with what is on the dvd. It's such an intimate, special show in that he explains the inspiration for many of his songs and shows personal, family photos and video footage. I plan to buy several copies and give them to friends and family during the holidays.

A "must have" for James Taylor fans

Created: 25/04/08
This is a great CD/DVD combination package. The live concert is awesome and hearkens back to the classic James Taylor days, with much of it being just him and his acoustic guitar singing all the old favorites as well as newer songs. The "one man band" is a bit of a misnomer however as he is accompanied during much of the concert by excellent Keyboards (provided by Larry Goldings), the Tanglewood Chorus on a couple of songs and special appearance by a very outrageous "drum machine" that you have to see to believe. I love it!

One Man Band [Digipak] [CD & DVD]

Created: 05/04/08
James Taylor is one of my favorite artists and I was intrigued when he released this set. The songs are familiar with just enough chatter by the artist between numbers. The DVD is visually wonderful and high quality. I was hoping that, like Paul Simon's last CD/DVD, there would be some different music on the DVD, but it is exactly the same as the CD. So unless you really want to watch James perform, you are probably just as well off to buy the CD alone. Either way, it is very nice, comfortable, and entertaining set. The DVD is actually about 2 hours long due to the addition of more chat between tunes. All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase.

James Taylor One Man Band

Created: 18/03/09
he steps to the microphone ,his voice soft spoken and begins to quote words from his own songs as a prelude to his vocal arrangements . Once he wore long hair and had these incredible piercing eyes . Now with old age, comes wisdom and james Taylor takes the stage as a professional . he molds his audience like clay and they melt in his hands.
all of his hits are sung and the legendary man leaves you wanting more. As the Cd dies down, you find yourself speechless . James Taylor has worked his magic on you. you now have a friend.
