Album Notes
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor).Recorded from May to September 1958. Includes original liner notes by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen with additional notes by Pete Welding. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. For an artist of Sinatra's stature, an artistic peak is a thing of no uncertain majesty. Such a peak was reached on ONLY THE LONELY, with the invaluable assistant of arranger Nelson Riddle. Foreshadowed by the glorious sob-fest of IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS, this album is a case of serendipity, where songs, arrangement and performance all combine for an unrelenting dose of heartbreak. The ominous, film-noirish flatted-fifths of "Angel Eyes" set the scene for a cuckold's tale, which ends with Sinatra's evanescently graceful bow-out, "'Scuse me while I disappear." The timeless "One For My Baby," one of the songs most closely identified with Sinatra, finds him pouring his troubles out to a bartender, who simultaneously pours out the much-needed antidote to the singer's pain. ONLY THE LONELY is a devastating, perfectly rendered account of a man unable to escape the cage of his own shattered dreams .

Editorial Reviews
Its ballads are some of the most exquisitely rendered odes to sadness he recorded, with Nelson Riddle's lush orchestral backdrops serving as reverb-heavy guardrails for Sinatro's bel canto encomiums...

Only the Lonely - An absolute must for any Sinatra fan

Created: 15/05/10
This concept album is beyond excellent. I didn't even care for Sinatra's music until I sat one evening with my husband and just listened to this cd. The feeling he sings with is enough to pull even the hardest of heart strings, and there isn't a human on the planet that can't relate to what he sings about. I can't relate in words how emotionally packed this collection is; and how perfect it is while sipping a glass of your favorite drink in low lighting and letting the pure talent of the music and lyrics just gently take you to the forgotten places of your heart.

Sings for Only the Lonely..Frank Sinatra

Created: 06/01/07
this was an album my mother loved and played all the time-I grew up with music 12/7. I love Sinatra, and many of these great songs are not on a collection album-as usual. If you love Sinatra...buy it. It is truly possibly his very best album. Only one person's opinion...but!!!

Frank At His Best

One of Frank's best.. As he described it, these "suicide" songs were a selection of his most sorrowful and moving songs of his career.

I bought this for my father (age 89) who is a big Frank Sinatra fan. He enjoys it very much. It brings back a lot of memories for him.
