Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall,Annette Benning.
Great Supporting actors and actresses in this film of the old west.
The life of Free GRazing was the cowpunchers and ranchers way of life on the way to market with herds. Local land barons who built towns with heir money and thought they owned everything in them as well as the people, were slowly dieing out, when right versus the law came to an abrupt meeting. And this story is the same.A land baron had the cowpunchers cook and a 16 yr old boy beat up killed and shot.Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall chase the local sheriff and the baron into a corner.A gunfighter with a tendency to shoot first then ask questions runs into a cowpuncher with a past. His past included far more than the gunfighter thought or the local baron. It seems the cowpuncher was trying to leave his past in the shadows, but the baron and the gunfighter brought them back out of the past to find that he was more dubious of situations and knew how to get out of these situations than they ever thought possible. Kevin Costner is the cowpuncher, Robert Duvall is the Rancher, and Annette Benning is the Doctors aide and sister.
A great family film plus romance for the ladies. Some sad scenes, beautiful scenery. Filmed in Canada. The 2 disk set is worth the money spent.

Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall are great together.
A group of Free Grazers drive there cattle into an area of open range and piss off a local rancher.
This movie rates a 5 out of 5 for me but I'm a huge western movie fan.
The movie has one of the best Gunfight scenes that has ever been filmed.
Running time 139 Minutes.
Rated R for Violence.
Not just a shoot um up they take time and make a good film.
Star's Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, & Annette Bening
The 2 Disk set has many Special Features like Deleted Scenes.
I hope you enjoy the film it makes a great addition to any western collection.

A tremendous western film. It might just be up there with "High Noon","True Grit","The Searchers"(Wayne's favorite movie)--and because of the beautiful camera work. I have never been a big fan of Kevin's movies..although he did a great job here acting AND directing, etc. Duvall is ALWAYS superb. Robert just missed an Oscar for starring, producing, directing, and finding the the $$ for THE APOSTLE,his long planned personal goal to do it even if it did take many years.....if you haven't seen Duvall in THE APOSTLE, you gotta do it!)...OPEN RANGE is a sleeper. I almost missed it,only seeing parts on cable. I had to have the whole thing..on dvd. If you like westerns, tremendous acting and locations with superb photography..you will want OPEN RANGE to own! You will watch it more than once. The big shoot-out at the last is as good a classic as any other you can remember! Only one complaint. The too drawn out too long romancing togetherness scenes finally between Kevin and the lady is a bit drawn out and a waste. A quicker happy wrap up would be much neater! It is still..and EXCELLENT film !!!

A Western drama about four free-grazing ranchers -- Boss Spearman, Charley Waite, Mose Harrison and Button -- whose cattle meander close to a small town ruled by a greedy sheriff and his cronies. Forced to defend their way of life, the cowboys take on the corrupt leaders, while Charley, a loner, is surprised by a newfound love.

One of the best westerns made recently. Robert Duvall's performance was exceptional, his character was a good man, the last of a dying breed and he portrayed the part better than anyone in hollywood could have. Kevin Costner did a great job as both actor and director. His character had a mysterious dark past. Supporting cast was also above average. The cinematography was outstanding. It makes you feel like you are actually there. I would recommend this to anyone interested in westerns.
