Jake Kasdan, Colin Hanks, Jack Black|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

ORANGE COUNTY is a teen comedy that, along with goofy lowbrow fun, offers a surprising amount of wit and heart. Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks) stars as Shaun, a carefree California surfer dude who loses a friend to a tsunami. Shaun is contemplating his life when he finds a brilliant novel buried in the sand. He reads it and decides to become a writer himself, and study with the author, who teaches at Stanford. He's eager to leave Orange County, where he lives with his clingy alcoholic mother (Catherine O'Hara) and his burnout brother Lance (a brilliantly debauched Jack Black). When Shaun's guidance counselor (Lily Tomlin) sends the wrong transcript to Stanford, Shaun needs all the help he can get from his seemingly hopeless family to salvage his dream. ORANGE COUNTY was directed by Jake Kasdan (Lawrence Kasdan's son) and written by Mike White (CHUCK & BUCK) who also plays Shaun's illiterate English teacher. Schuyler Fisk (Sissy Spacek's daughter) plays Ashley, Shaun's animal-loving girlfriend, and she and Hanks make an attractive and sympathetic pair. While all kinds of insanity (including hilarious turns by Black, O'Hara, and Harold Ramis) spins around them, the young and dynamic couple remain the soulful center of the film.

Jack Black County

Orange County presents a comical, feel-good movie, with good cast choices. Good to share a laugh with friends.

I watched the movie Orange County with a few of my friends. We agreed that it is a good movie if you want something to put you in a laughable mood, but we didn't quite appreciate the cliche teen life it portrays. The movie focuses on late teen years, which seemed much too cliche to be appreciated by most fellow teens. Situations presented in this movie are very uncommon. If the script writer wanted to make the characters' lives look average, he didn't succeed.
Some situations in Orange County are hard to believe, for example the school counseller mixing up the names and grade point averages of students, or someone breaking into the Dean's office just to be accepted in the college. These situations are highly improbable, but never-the-less quite hilarious when they are presented in Orange County.

If you are looking for a funny movie or a movie to laugh at with friends, Orange County isn't a bad pick. It's fit for a Friday night, and suitable for children 13 and older.

Great Movie by Any Standard

I don't buy movies on a whim. Orange County appealed to me for a long time before I bought it and was able to enjoy it in it's entirity. The performances by the actor's hold together an extrodinarily well-written script. There are so many "little" scenes where the major cast and the character actors just transcend a teen angst movie. It's entertaining, socially uplifting and educational. It shows teens as real people with all the power challenges that stand in their way to a better life and all the resources that can be. I found this to be one of my top ten fun movies of all time. I hope my grandkids will appreciiate this movie as much as I did. Excellent direction and for a movie about an aspiring writer, it delivers a superior story.

Great movie with entertaining characters. The only character I think should have been left on the cutting floor was the girlfriend. If the movie was not so well written, she could have slowed the movie down tremendously with her whinning and low expectations. But other then that, the movie still delievers on good humor and over dramatics; all ingredients for a perfectly whacky comedy. By the way, the people of Orange County are not that shallow, we give that honor to Los Angeles.

Great movie

This movie is great, it is well written and well acted. Two of the main characters are played by Sissy Spacek's daughter and Tom Hank's son. Talent definitely did NOT skip a generation in this instance. Engaging story, endearing characters and excellent cast make this one of my all time favorites.

This has to be my favorite movie of all time! It is SO hilarious that I laugh until I almost urinate on myself. Jack Black is SO funny as always and Tom Hanks son, Colin Hanks, is such a good actor just like his dad. It is definately a must see!!!
