Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "To pull all the operatics off, producers have wisely cast solid pros Sarsgaard and Farmiga, who bring real dimension to a couple reeling from one tragedy and about to experience another....The real find is young Fuhrman..."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (07/23/2009)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A] shamelessly effective horror film based on the most diabolical of movie malefactors, a child."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (07/23/2009)

"[I]t's a cut above most spooky-kid movies, with a twist that sets it apart....The plot unfolds with a palpable sense of tension."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (07/24/2009)

"ORPHAN would never work as the thrillingly wicked indulgence it is without the psycho intensity of Fuhrman. She's boosted by Saarsgard and Farmiga..."
Movieline - Melissa Anderson (07/23/2009)

"[I]t's the uproarious twist that will land this one in the horror hall of fame/shame."
Total Film - Ken McIntyre (08/04/2009)

Creepy flick, great

A creepy film about the orphan from hell who sweet-talks her way into an adoptive family's home. All Esther wants is a little love, and she won't let little things like multiple murders get in the way of that. Sure the third act could be considered ludicrous, but if you just roll with the flow it's pretty damned entertaining in a disturbing way.

PQ detail on the Blu is excellent, almost 3D like in outside scenes. Stubble, pores, makeup, clothing fabric, all razor sharp. The color palette here is appropriately muted, feeding the creepy, depressing nature of the film. Dark scenes came through very well. AQ is very effective as well. While not a non-stop action barrage, the flames lick around you, the jump scares make you jump, the gunshots are loud and the popping sounds of repeated claw hammer vs. skull are wonderfully reproduced.

Disappointingly the extras are a bit on the light side including only a featurette on Esther and other killer kids and some deleted scenes with an alternate ending. The disc is BD-Live enabled though the only thing I could find on the movie was the downloadable theatrical trailer. There's also a Child Welfare warning at the beginning of playback, to reassure people that there probably aren't too many Esther's floating around real-life adoption agencies (or I would hope so at least )

Orphan...MUST SEE THIS ONE!!!!

Created: 08/02/10
When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought "Oh God, another one of those movies." But I was surprised that after I'd gone and seen it, I'd actually thoroughly enjoyed it.

Isabelle Fuhrman is the "orphan"; that is, 9-year-old Esther who seems a little strange and morbid despite the adopted parents instance attraction to her. When violent events began taking place that are connected to Esther, the parents began to suspect that there is more to the little girl than appears.

Fuhrman definitely was the right choice for the role of Esther; she has an attractive face and her youth doesn't strain her acting abilities which were very convincing. I won't lie though; the movie was very grisly, and even I had to turn away from the screen a few times. Even the twist ending really shocked me, and I'm not easily shocked. I really think that despite how it looks, give it a shot, because it wasn't a bad little movie. It was well acted, well thought out, and seriously creepy.

Orphan my butt?

This movie could have been a lot better than it was. It goes something like this......Parents 3rd child is stillborn, Parents decide to adopt a child and give this child all the love they were going to give Jessica. Now the are two children are a boy who is the oldest. and a deaf girl who is the youngest child and would have been the middle child if Jessica would have lived. O.k. the Parents go to adopt a child at the Orphanage. The dad is walking around the house and comes across a young girl........the dad talks to the girl then the wife, they adopt Easter form the Orphanage......they take her home with them, Easter tries to kill her younger brother then her younger sister, then the mom. This 12 yr old wanna be trys to seduce the dad, then Girl trys to kill dad, then mom comes home from hospital.......then mom fights Easter in her home then it moves to the ice and Easter just grabbed the womans leg and said,:"Don't let me die, please Mommie"? Then Mommy kicked Ester hard enough to brake her neck, Easter goes under ice of pond they were fighting on. Everyone lives happily ever after and the kicker was: Easter was really a 33 yr. old mental challenged psycho. Good movie, will make you want to be more carefully of who you take into house too. Enjoy the movie.

Excellent Movie!! Ending was totally unexpected.

I loved this movie. It starts out like any other but quickly steps up the pace, as a good mystery should. But the drama is always building up with every scene and the audience is left wondering what will happen next. I watched it 3x already, soaking in every nuance. The acting was devilishly delicious by the antagonist.
This is a good thriller that makes even smart people pay attention.
Don't forget to watch the deleted scenes and the alternative ending.
