In retrospect, the band can be seen as something of a prototype for the alternative-tinged folk-rock renaissance that occured later in the decade with the Counting Crows and lesser groups like Tonic and Third Eye Blind. Toad The Wet Sprocket represented the friendliest possible face of '90s alt-rock, its sound full of feathery harmonies and sunny melodies. The more pastoral side of the group's sound is exemplified by the breezy "Walk on the Ocean," with its acoustic strumming and languid fretless bass. Contrary to popular myth however, Toad was always capable of shading its style with subtle darkness. "Hold Her Down" (presented here in a remixed version) is an unsettling tale of sexual abuse, and "Fall Down" is a terse, angular rocker. "All I Want" is Toad at its best, a transcendent midtempo tune full of achingly beautiful harmonies, soulful lyricism, and a gentle thoughtfulness clearly at odds with the contemporaneous grunge bands to which Toad existed as a viable alternative.

Great songwriting / sound from the 90's

Created: 09/08/09
Anyone who remembers the 1990's era music can recall some really great "song-oriented" music. Groups such as The Gin Blossoms, The Rembrandts, Dishwalla, and The Smithereens along with grunge/alt Seattle sound bands created great music to listen to while driving with the windows rolled down on a cool evening.
Toad the West Sprocket were the forerunners of jangle crunch alternative rock.Along with organic guitar riff music arrangements, vocalist Glenn Phillips gave the group a raw but refined edge with his urgent vocal style. P.S. (A Toad Retrospective) is an excellent example of a greatest hits album including the edgy chorused titles "Come down", "Fall down", deep lyrical, spatially arranged songs like "All I want", "Walk on the Ocean", and thought provoking ballads like "Something’s always wrong"
There are good music acts out now, but it quite doesn't seem to have the deeper meaning of the music of 1990's, where vocalists and musical arrangements had an organic, non-formulaic sound, and wrote about issues without incessantly whining and complaining. Hopefully, I will look back on the millennium decade and can say music artists like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, Jack Johnson, and Feist opened up a new era of creative expression to remember.
To future of good music,
C.G.

PS – Toad the Wet Sprocket CD

I've been a fan of Toad the Wet Sprocket for a long time. I wanted this CD but hadn't been able to find it in any of the used CD stores. Then I found it for a great price on eBay.

Not a perfect greatest hits, but still a great album.

Sure, for a "greatest hits", it is missing a couple of good songs, but if you want a CD full of good Toad songs this is it.

Husband's Favorite Band

All I know is that my husband enjoys listening to their music. To be honest, I have heard a few of their songs and they sound pretty good.
