Set in No Name City, California during the Gold Rush, this musical comedy concerns prospectors Ben and Pardner and their unusual unclear family. The business partners strike a deal to share Ben's wife Elizabeth, whom Ben purchased. But the free-thinking Ben is worried about rivalry over Elizabeth from the town's all-male population, hungry for female company. A top notch movie !!!!

Had to buy this DVD of a great movie that came out in 1969; wish I had seen it on a big screen.
How often have we been entertained by the unlikely singing of Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin. All loveable characters with wonderful music and lyrics by Lerner and Loew. In real life the early California gold rush was visited with thieves and murderers, but this is a vacation from reality.
Lee Marvin is Ben Rumsford, a scruffy, honest hard worker who knows what he wants and knows himself well enough to even predict his mood swings. He doesn't regret his vices, he relishes them. When he knows he has played out a claim or starting to feel comfortable he also knows it's time to move on.
Clint Eastwood is Partner who arrives as a pie-eyed farmer hoping to cash in on the riches of California and lands with a thud. He and Ben become partners when Ben discovers gold while digging a grave for Partner's brother.
In a drunken state Ben buys a wife, Elizabeth (Jean Seberg), from a man who has one too many. She is now his like a mining claim. She learns to love him for what he is, and in that time she also develops feelings for Partner.
As entertainment is often fantasy, rather than have everyone feel guilty about their feelings, they all rationalize that a woman can have 2 husbands, especially in the uncivilized town of No Name City. So, Ben and Partner and partners in all ways.
New characters come along and complicate things while the gold is playing out.
You will laugh, sing along, and learn to love all main characters right up to the end, when all are once again true to their basic nature. Ed Scott

This is a rollicking musical, one of my all-time favorites! The story of the California gold rush and the lucky lady who gets to have 2 husbands is engrossing. Lee Marvin is excellent as Ben Rumson, drunk and grizzled. This is also my FAVORITE CLINT EASTWOOD MOVIE!!!!!!! I don't care much for Clint Eastwood, but I like him in this movie, in my opinion the best movie he made. Clint sings, though not very well, but at least he isn't violent or a smart-ass. Some great songs, Harve Presnell is impressive as Rotten Luck Willie, and Jean Seaberg is awesome as THE LUCKY LADY WHO GETS TO HAVE 2 HUSBANDS!!!!!

"Paint Your Wagon" with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin is one of my all time favorite musical/comeddies. So I was excited to see it on ebay. Clint Eastwood fans would probably not belive Clint is really singing love songs. Eeastwood and Marvin become partners in a goldmine claim, then enters a woman. I wont spoil it for you by telling you the details. It's funny and easy to watch.The DVD did have an area where voice and lip movement did not match. I'm not sure if this is something due to my TV or the DVD.

I purchased this particular DVD because 'Paint Your Wagon' has been a favorite movie of mine since my childhood. We put it on as soon as it arrived in the mail and fell in love all over again. Not only is the storyline great but the cinematography is breathtaking and the musical selections are fun to watch. Harve Presnell's rendition of 'Mariah' brings tears to my eyes, and the final scenes of the demise of 'No Name City' are hilarious.

If you are a fan of the big screen musical, you will love "Paint Your Wagon'. Besides, how many times will you get to see Clint Eastwood sing and dance?
