Frank Sinatra is at his best in this wonderful lounge-esque classic.
Sinatra (Joey) is a down on his luck singer/womanizer looking for a break in San Francisco when he runs into an old acquaintance (Rita Hayworth) from one of his seedier night club gigs.
Hayworth is now a rich widowed socialite and Sinatra's only hope for a club of his own via the route of his charm and promised love.
Kim Novak (Vertigo) plays a lounge singer/dancer who slowly falls for Sinatra and vice-versa, which interferes in Sinatra's plans for his club dreams with Hayworth.
The costumes and dresses are stunning for their era, or any for that matter and Sinatra is at his crooning best.
If you loved Kim Novak in Vertigo, she won't disappoint you here.
She is the main reason I bought this DVD.
Her beauty and innocence shine bright in Pal Joey.
Hayworth's character as a jealous man-izer is also believeable.
The shoe is on the other foot, if you will, for a change!

Pal Joey is just an excuse to string together a series of timeless songs with the incredible voice of Frank Sinatra combined with two of the most beautiful actresses to ever grace the silver screen. The plot is well sanitized from the original screen play yet there are moments of playful sexual inuendo and a racy for 1957 bedroom and shower scene with Rita Hayworth sing "Bewitched". Joey would normally be a loathsome character yet Hollywood manages to make a womanizing louse endearing and likeable. Kim Novak, singing My Funny Valentine is vulnerable yet desireable. The film also features outstanding costume design and is filmed beautifully in vivid colour. It is hard not to enjoy Pal Joey for all nostalgia, the wonderful music and perfomances. Rita Hayworth is likely the most beautiful star from this era and she steals the show with her one glove strip tease number Zip and her incredibly sensual Bedroom/Shower scene.

This is one of Frank's best musicals. His acting is supreme, and he and Kim Novak definitely had chemistry. The story is delightful, the ending a bit corny but face it, back them they all were now as we are so sophisticated. Rita Hayworth was lovely and did a great job as "The Keeper" of Joey.
I remember Frank made a statement about the billing of Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak. His lasting statement was "I don't mind being in THAT sandwich."
Great film, cute story, every FS fan should have it in their library!

Great movie, Frank Sinatra shows that confident and cocky 50's image that women melt over. Kim Novack is lucious and Rita never looked better in my opinion, a great ending for a hapless guy like Joey, love the music too. Suggest fiding 'Cover Girl' with Rita Hayworth too, in Color, 1944, and "Down to Earth" also in Color, both were Hollywood at its best.

The movie itself is a classic, who doesn't love Frank Sinatra? Lots of music and songs, Frank at his best! However the film is fuzzy and had written captions below of all conversation. I bought it because my husband, a Sinatra fan, likes all his movies and we didn't have this one. I think I will get another as this is not satisfactory for me.
