Movie synopsis

A girl kneels over the grave of her murdered dog, praying for a miracle, while off in the distance, a man rides toward town on a pale horse. Clint Eastwood's PALE RIDER was the filmmaker's first Western in nearly a decade. It finds a pleasant balance between the mystical revisionism of films such as HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and the traditional Western. Eastwood stars as the Preacher, who wanders into a dusty California town and tries to rescue a community of gold prospectors that is being terrorized by the local corporate mining operation, which is strip-mining the land. He's taken in by Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty), who lives with Sarah Wheeler (Carrie Snodgrass) and her 14-year-old daughter, she of the murdered pooch, Megan (Sydney Penny). The Preacher is something of a blend of Eastwood's Man with No Name and the title character of George Stevens's SHANE. The story and treatment are straightforward and entertaining, and the strong performances draw the audience in. The Preacher remains a mysterious character, but in the end, as he takes on the evil mining corporation's hired guns, it's impossible not to root for him.

Mildly entertaining, not amoung the best Eastwood Westerns

This movie strikes me as a re-invention of High Plains Drifter. The story line is very similar. Pale rider seems to me to be of a higher quality; the settings seem a little more realistic, not as much like a temporary movie set. However, I watch movies mostly for entertainment value, and I think that High Plains Drifter was easily as entertaining. I think the overall quality of the acting is better in Pale Rider. Personally, I like the fantasy revenge / justice style of many of the Eastwood westerns. Just so you know how to gauge this review, I favor his movies like Fistful of Dollars were pretty much all the bad guys (almost the whole cast) dies in some spectacular showdown. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, is another of my favorites. If that is the kind that you like, this movie will disappoint you a bit. It lacks the great tense scenes, the Fantastic music scores etc. However, it has the enhanced quality and missing voice overs that many do not like. The basic plot is about a mining camp being pressured to abandon their claims by the big powerful local rich guy bully. Their 'salvation' is provided by a tough guy preacher, played by Mr. Eastwood. I thought the Unforgiven was a very well made movie, but I did not like it. I would give it a 1 star rating, while G, B, & U and Fistful would get 5 stars (again, based on how they entertained me. Pale rider by comparison, is right in the middle at 3 stars

Clint Eastwood at his best. He is a true testament to the cast of actors in this movie. He uses the spirit of a man to help pull a group together to fight against crooks and thugs who like to push and bully people around. He is a powerful figure in this movie and is a true leader. One of his best works. This movie is action packed from start to finish. And is truly a wonderful western classic.!!!

Clint Eastwood was at his best on this quality western. One of those sort of dark, moody movies and stretches your mind, Pale Rider gives a rallying cry for the underdog against the rich miner in the local town. My most favorite performance was John Russell, the outlaw sheriff, who was set to kill the Preacher. I love his work, and this was no slouch performance.
All in all, not bad, but it's not your best John Wayne western. It's Clint Eastwood, and its dark.
