A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror by Michael Allen and Larry Schweikart (2007, Paperback, Reprint)

Author: Michael Allen, Larry Schweikart | Publisher: Sentinel | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
One of conservative commentator Larry Schweikart's primary concerns is American history and how it is told--or mistold. When he reads textbooks and general studies, Schweikart sees bias and negativity where he thinks there should be appreciation and celebration for the great story of a nation that is truly exceptional. In THE PATRIOT'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, Schweikart provides a comprehensive--and in his view, corrective--account of the full sweep of American history, beginning with Columbus and ending with the War on Terror. He surveys major events, ideas, and personalities, while providing essential social and political context--and he connects American life today with the principles of the Founding Fathers.

Industry Reviews
"[A] frankly nationalistic--often blatantly partisan--text in which the United States is presented as having a duty to lead while other countries apparently have an obligation to follow....This is a point of view with few adherents in the academy these days...but it's surely one that enjoys warm support among many red-state conservatives, and in the halls of the White House."

More balanced than I had thought

Created: 22/08/10
First to state the obvious the author of this book makes no apologies for being conservative and his conservative point of view. With that being said the book was much more balanced than I had expected from reading the introduction and other online reviews.

As another reviewer pointed out at times the book can be dry. Reading over 800 pages of American History (nearly 1000 if you include notes) you cannot expected every page to be a nail biter. However the amount of subjects and events this author covers is comprehensive from Christopher Columbus all the way to the modern day War on Terror.

Since the point of view this book is written from is not one covered by our modern day educational system it makes a great supplement to what your children are learning in school. It also makes a great refresher book for adults or a reference for around the house.

Incredible!!

Created: 07/09/10
I bought "A PATRIOT'S HISTORY of the UNITED STATES" two weeks ago and was UNBELIEVABLY impressed with the IN DEPTH and UNKNOWN HISTORICAL FACTS that we were NEVER TAUGHT in SCHOOL or COLLEGE.
It's a book that you won't want to put down because you are wanting to find out more of our GREAT AMERICAN HISTORY that we didn't know.
I have NO complaints and I'm willing to bet neither will you.
Other So-Called "History" books that I've owned or used in school have nothing on this one including NOT BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT!!!
Overall, I'd recommend this book to EVERYONE, INCLUDING ALL THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT our GREAT COUNTRY.
GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA!!

Patriot's History of the US

GREAT BOOK. This was recommended by Glenn Beck and his audience - WOW!!! Everyone should own a copy of this book. This has info that I've never heard. Reading is sometimes "dry" because of the detail used describing a point or the actual quote. But you'll learn things of founding fathers that simply amaze you. About every two paragraphs I've stopped and told my wife that she needed to hear this or that... She finally told me to quit buggingher and finish the book. Have even read short facts to grandchildren, which raised their interest in American history. Great reference: will stay on my coffee table for discussion with friends and family.

I'm tired of all the negativity being portrayed about our great nation's history and wanted a book that told the truth, but with a positive tone. I LOVE this book. It is well written with tons of footnotes and references to substantiate the facts presented and is the best history book I have ever read. And I'm a history major from 1973. I highly recommend this book, not only as a counter to Howard Zinn's communist perspective of American history, but as a general text that chronicles our history in an honest way while making the reader proud to be an American

History of the United States

I'm teaching a US History class this year and I wanted more sources. This book seemed interesting in that I felt Howard Zinn's A people's history of the United States was a little gloomy and harsh. He made it sound like we were horrible people always searching for greed.
