Movie synopsis

Two average sci-fi geeks get caught up in the ultimate interplanetary adventure after picking up an extraterrestrial during a road trip to Area 51 and becoming the targets of a nationwide manhunt. Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are two British sci-fi geeks on holiday in America. After a trip to Comic-Con to meet their favorite author, Adam Shadowchild (Jeffrey Tambor), Graeme and Clive load up their RV and hit the road for a tour of some of the most famous UFO hotspots in the American Southwest. They know we're not alone in the universe, but they won't be satisfied until they get a firsthand glimpse of the famed Area 51. However, somewhere deep in the Nevada desert, the two UFO enthusiasts narrowly avoid crashing into a speeding car when they happen across a most unlikely hitchhiker. Paul (voice of Seth Rogan) is a pint-sized alien who has spent the last 60 years in Area 51. He's been cooped up in the care of the U.S. Government for far too long, and he's starting to get a little homesick. Though Graeme and Clive are more than willing to help their wisecracking new friend get back to his mother ship, Special Agent Zoil (Jason Bateman) of the FBI is closing in fast. And he's not the only one; in their race to get their new friend home, Graeme and Clive have also become unwitting kidnappers, and the enraged father of their not-so-unwilling captive, Ruth (Kristen Wiig), is determined to rescue his daughter at all costs. Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, and David Koechner co-star.

Editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] slacker bromance....The addition of Jason Bateman and Bill Hader as Men In Black on their trail, Kristen Wiig as a partially sighted Christian and Seth Rogen as the 'voice' of Paul add something new."
Uncut - Michael Bonner (04/01/2011)

3 stars out of 5 - "Briskly directed by Greg Mottola....[Paul] blends neatly with the landscape and co-stars..."
Total Film - Kevin Harley (04/01/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a a sci-fi flick, but it's also a heartfelt tribute to Spielberg, something that reaches its crescendo in a plate-spinning final showdown that is action-paced, funny and unexpectedly moving."
Empire - Chris Hewitt (03/01/2011)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] cheeky spoof that puts a hilarious hurt to everything it loves....Rogen is a nonstop hoot, but it's the byplay between Frost and Pegg that roots the laughs in characters we care about."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (03/31/2011)

"[A] sweetly daft spaceman comedy....The filmmakers offer ups a spot-on cartoon of types we've loved in dozens of other movies..." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (03/25/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] inspired, hysterical, spot-on spoof....[With a] sharp-tongued central character and many witty references to popular sci-fi flicks."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (03/18/2011)

"Where Paul takes off is in its embrace and knowledge of sci-fi-icons....The creatures movements, facial expressions and interactions with human co-stars are seamless."
USA Today - Scott Bowles (03/18/2011)

"[A] sort of fractured E.T., with Seth Rogen never more likeable than as the bald-headed extraterrestrial who just wants to phone home..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/18/2011)

I have to say, I really liked this movie. I'm a recent convert to Blu-Ray technology...yes, I know. This was the first BD I purchased. I'm not going to give a critical review of the movie quality but I will say on a lower end player and LCD TV, it looked great. No issues at all with playback and the extras were enjoyable to watch as well. Even more interesting was the movie was essentially filmed in my State of New Mexico.

The movie deals with two British comic book geeks traveling to Comic-Con and across the U.S. that encounter an Alien outside Area 51. For the past 60 years a smart-Alec alien, named Paul, has been assisting the US Government at a top secret base. When he discovers he's no longer needed he decides to escape and ends up meeting Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) in their rented RV. Hilarity ensues. During this time they are chased by fanatical Government agents and the father of an accidentally kidnapped women. The little alien will take the two misfits to become intergalactic heroes.

This is a great movie. It has a lot of big names and does not fall far from the tree when it comes to their other great movies. If you like alien movies, Seth Rogen, Bill Nader, or any of the lead characters' previous movies, Paul will not let you down. It's great to have the three copies, it comes in handy when you have a roommate or like to watch movies on the go. This is a great movie and amazing deal.
