Movie synopsis

Two average sci-fi geeks get caught up in the ultimate interplanetary adventure after picking up an extraterrestrial during a road trip to Area 51 and becoming the targets of a nationwide manhunt. Graeme (Simon Pegg) and Clive (Nick Frost) are two British sci-fi geeks on holiday in America. After a trip to Comic-Con to meet their favorite author, Adam Shadowchild (Jeffrey Tambor), Graeme and Clive load up their RV and hit the road for a tour of some of the most famous UFO hotspots in the American Southwest. They know we're not alone in the universe, but they won't be satisfied until they get a firsthand glimpse of the famed Area 51. However, somewhere deep in the Nevada desert, the two UFO enthusiasts narrowly avoid crashing into a speeding car when they happen across a most unlikely hitchhiker. Paul (voice of Seth Rogan) is a pint-sized alien who has spent the last 60 years in Area 51. He's been cooped up in the care of the U.S. Government for far too long, and he's starting to get a little homesick. Though Graeme and Clive are more than willing to help their wisecracking new friend get back to his mother ship, Special Agent Zoil (Jason Bateman) of the FBI is closing in fast. And he's not the only one; in their race to get their new friend home, Graeme and Clive have also become unwitting kidnappers, and the enraged father of their not-so-unwilling captive, Ruth (Kristen Wiig), is determined to rescue his daughter at all costs. Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, and David Koechner co-star.

Editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] slacker bromance....The addition of Jason Bateman and Bill Hader as Men In Black on their trail, Kristen Wiig as a partially sighted Christian and Seth Rogen as the 'voice' of Paul add something new."
Uncut - Michael Bonner (04/01/2011)

3 stars out of 5 - "Briskly directed by Greg Mottola....[Paul] blends neatly with the landscape and co-stars..."
Total Film - Kevin Harley (04/01/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's a a sci-fi flick, but it's also a heartfelt tribute to Spielberg, something that reaches its crescendo in a plate-spinning final showdown that is action-paced, funny and unexpectedly moving."
Empire - Chris Hewitt (03/01/2011)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] cheeky spoof that puts a hilarious hurt to everything it loves....Rogen is a nonstop hoot, but it's the byplay between Frost and Pegg that roots the laughs in characters we care about."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (03/31/2011)

"[A] sweetly daft spaceman comedy....The filmmakers offer ups a spot-on cartoon of types we've loved in dozens of other movies..." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (03/25/2011)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] inspired, hysterical, spot-on spoof....[With a] sharp-tongued central character and many witty references to popular sci-fi flicks."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (03/18/2011)

"Where Paul takes off is in its embrace and knowledge of sci-fi-icons....The creatures movements, facial expressions and interactions with human co-stars are seamless."
USA Today - Scott Bowles (03/18/2011)

"[A] sort of fractured E.T., with Seth Rogen never more likeable than as the bald-headed extraterrestrial who just wants to phone home..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/18/2011)

This is a comedy about two nerdy science fiction buffs from England that encounters an alien named PAUL. They go on an amazing adventure trying to return Paul to his mothership. It is adult entertainment because of the foul language so don't buy this expecting to entertain your young children. There are quite few lines from other science fiction movies that are sprinkled throughout this movie.

I'm lucky enough not have spent a dime on this movie. I expected a very funny movie, and i'm a HUGE fan of cheesy/silly/slap stick type movies. This was 1 I was horriably disappointed with. I like the 2 stars, and the "fake" alien looked very real. The only funny actor in this movie was the bad guy, and the girl that tried to curse alot. Being new 2 it she made giggle. But I think this movie was the type of movie that people thought would be funny, but wasn't. So in my opinion, which everyone has, I am glad the movie is over and wouldnt ever watch it again. I'm actually surprised so many people gave it 5s. I mean 5? come on seriously? Steer clear of this 1, or let your buddy shell out the bucks on it.

Somehow if I were truly an alien from a more advanced civilizations, the Earth would be the last place I would want to visit because although benevolent as portrayed in movies such E.T., the Day the Earth Stood Still, Close Encounter of the Third Kind, and Paul our government without any legitimate reason is presented as doing its best to destroy them or dissect them for scientific purposes. On the other hand the aliens that are or will be here sooner or later to destroy us!

Paul is unique because it has been used by the government to the fullest extent and the next step is to destroy him.

Before that happens though, he manages to escape and teach us some lessons about our religious fanaticism, loyalty, enjoying life, and performing what we consider miracles until we reach the unexpected climax of a movie that is worth seeing and having fun in the process.

After seeing this movie once, there was clearly more value in seeing it again, so I wanted to own it.
The animation and humanization of Paul, the alien, is outstanding and this is one of the most fun, road-trip movies I've ever seen.
If there is a message, it would almost have to be: "lighten up".
